Apart from Vijay, they have been let down on a subcontinental pitch. They have done better even on more difficult pitches than this in India.

Entire lower order is a lottery. Throw in dodgy record of Dhoni anywhere outside subcontinent. India was one wicket away from a mega collapse. you can bowl only a s well as you are allowed to bowl. Both Broad and Anderson bowled very well post lunch. This is first day of first of five tests. Last thing you need is showing bravado and getting bowled out for 180. Considering our sorry ass record abroad in the last 4 serires they ought to be as circumspect as possible. India had several passeages where they had to be deliberately slow. PPost lunch, post tea, towards the end of the day . You sound like they are playing on Rajkot pitch to pile up 360 on day one without losing a wicket.

They could easily have dominated this test if they had shown half of the application they did at Wanderers.

Rahane.. has to be more consistent. Dhawan also has to dleiver. M Vijay has to be consistent.Not 5, 10 then a 90 against 20, 30 and 50. They are all n the wrong side f 20. So they have to delivery big. 1) Consistency 2) Collective performance 3) Converting starts These 3 we lack.

When you bat 90 overs, you are bound to lose wickets in a test, either because of some good bowing or some mistake in shot selection. Also, its not that easy to bat on this pitch as some people are making it out to be. There is some reverse swing and pace is also sluggish which means you can't play shots and score runs quickly. You can only score about 3 RPO once the ball gets old.

England did bowl better than in SL series and Vijay especially did well to play all day as well as score. He has the temperament of an opener. not sure about dhawan. Vijay will have tougher days in this series on tougher pitches but he has grabbed his chance.

When you are playing with 5 bats, 2 of the top 5 need to score big 100s, especially as pitch is pretty flat.

I don't know how you are saying "he has to be more consistent" ?

Yes, he did not score much in NZ, but those were some tough conditions for batting. Top 3 from both teams had struggled there. Such things happen, but he needs to be more careful about field placements form now on.

Top order is not going to slam centuries in every innings. The lower order has to contribute as they are in the side as bowlers who can bat.
