An Ally Splits, Another is Fiercely Critical: BJP's Tamil Nadu Problems

The BJP's alliance in Tamil Nadu appears to be fraying with one member walking out today and another publicly criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. MDMK chief V Gopalaswamy or Vaiko quit the BJP-led NDA alliance, making good his threat last week. He had hit out at two BJP leaders for criticizing him. "Being in NDA is untenable because of PM Modi's policies," Mr Vaiko, 70, said in a statement today. He had objected to two BJP leaders saying the MDMK should be thrown out of the coalition as Mr Vaiko repeatedly targeted PM Modi. One of the leaders, H Raja, had reportedly said Mr Vaiko may not be able to return safely from public meetings if he continued to criticise Mr Modi. Mr Vaiko had questioned why Mr Modi was silent at such remarks made against him. The BJP contested the national election in Tamil Nadu with five allies - the DMDK, headed by actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth, Vaiko's MDMK, the PMK of S Ramadoss, and two smaller parties. Mr Vaiko has been a constant irritant for the BJP and was widely expected to leave the BJP-led coalition. But Mr Ramadoss was unusually sharp when he hit out at Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's suggestion that the Bhagwat Gita should be declared the national book. "PM Modi has done nothing praiseworthy in six months in office except language and cultural imposition," Mr Ramados said scathingly. "It is improper to thrust the Gita on everyone in a secular country. This will only strengthen arguments that the Modi government wants to turn India into a Hindu country," he added. Ms Swaraj defended her suggestion at an event to mark "5,151 years" of the Gita - the book based on Hindu god Krishna's sermon to Prince Arjuna before the epic Mahabharata war. "Bhagwad Gita has answers to everybody's problems and that's why I said in Parliament that it should be declared the national holy book," the minister said. She also said PM Modi had already elevated the book to national status by gifting it to US President Barack Obama.

There is no way Amma and Vijayakanth coming together for a coalition .Either DMK or stick with BJP Also with Vasan forming a new party Congress will mostly be left alone again .Too much baggage. Also BJP should have given Anbumani Ramdoss some junior ministerial post if they were serious about sticking with the alliance .

Bjp won't win even one seat in Tamil Nadu if they go alone. They are virtually non existent in many parts of Tamil Nadu. This is my personal experience being there for the last 3 years. From my observation, they are bit strong in Coimbatore, kanyakumari , and Ramanathapuram. They won't even win in their stronghold. But one thing is for sure, they are more popular than Congress. Almost every pro Dravidian party hates Congress. Its either Amma or Dmk. That's the way it is in Tamil Nadu. Both have powerful media, both spread their propaganda.

well the BJP has to start somewhere right? More than winning seats they need to aim for 10% of the total vote cast. I dont think they will get many seats. Its the same for WB, i am looking for 20% vote share in that state. The BJP can afford to aim for vote share in these states. I think with recent assembly gains they will have numbers in the rajya sabha in about 2-3 years time. More than TN the lowest laying fruit for them is Telangana. @BE In which case makes sense for the DMDK to stick with the BJP. The pan DMK alliance probably will have way too many members in it. More than the PMK i feel the BJP should ally with the DMDK

RSS 're-converts' 200 Agra Muslims, says more in line AGRA: Members of at least 57 Muslim families were converted to Hinduism at a ceremony called 'Purkhon ki ghar vapsi', a mass conversion jointly organized by Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag, an offshoot of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and Bajrang Dal in Agra on Monday. RSS regional head Rajeshwar Singh said more than 200 Muslims were "brought back to Hinduism" in the mass event held in Madhunagar area of the city. According to organizers, the converts will soon be given new names. Talking to TOI, Singh claimed that around 5,000 more Muslims and Christians will be "brought back into Hindu fold" in Aligarh on this Christmas. "The grand event will be held at Maheshwari College in Aligarh," he said, daring anyone to stop it. With saffron flags hoisted on rooftops of makeshift houses in this slum cluster, and matras being recited by priests, members of as many as 57 Muslim families washed feet of Hindu idols to mark their return to the religion. Long vermillion marks were put on their foreheads and they were given Prasad to eat. Later, RSS and Bajrang Dal activists gave them a 'mantra' to chant the whole day and prepared a list of all the 'converts', to get their voter IDs and Aadhaar cards made, with their new names. Sharifa, 40, was seen debating the right way of performing an aarti with her daughter-in-law, Afsha, in a small temple that has been erected by RSS men in the slum in Madhunagar. An idol of goddess Kali has also been placed in the temple, as majority of people living in the area hail from West Bengal. Sufia Begum,76, who is the oldest woman among the converts, told TOI: "I read Quran and offered namaz five times a day. Now at this age, I will read Ganesh aarti. I don't find any major difference in the teachings of the two religions." "The RSS people assured us that they will provide us better place to live, better food and schooling for my grandsons. I don't mind change of religion, as religion doesn't give us food to eat.Rajeshwar Singh told TOI that RSS spends Rs 50 lakh every month on conversion of an average 1,000 families. "It spends Rs 8-10 lakh per month on fuel costs alone in west UP," he added. "We have re-converted 2.73 lakh Muslims and Christians in Braj region that includes Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura, Firozabad, Etah, Meerut, Mainpuri and Uttarakhand since 2003. The upcoming mass re-conversion event in which some 5,000 Muslims and Christians will be brought back into Hindu fold will be headed by Yogi Adityanath on December 25 in Aligarh," Singh said. Singh also claimed that RSS has taken possession of as many as 60 churches across the state, where no Christians worship now, "as they have all been re-converted to Hinduism". "Ek din in girijagharo ki deewarein bhi gir jayengi aur hamara desh sirf hinduon ka hoga (one day these churches will crumble and our country will belong to the Hindus alone)," he added. Ajju Chauhan, the Bajrang Dal leader who zeroed in on the slum in Madhunagar and organized the mass re-conversion event, was overwhelmed after the puja. More than three dozen RSS and Bajrang Dal members were guarding the pandal to avoid any untoward incident. Talking to TOI, Aslam Qureishi, prominent Sunni leader of the city, said, "This is just a tactic of the RSS to misguide Muslims."

Modi-led BJP outnumbers Congress in state Assemblies for first time since Independence

The Narendra Modi-led party, which already has the most number of Parliament members, went ahead of the Congress in the number of MLAs just after Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly elections. As of today, the BJP has 1,025 MLAs compared to Congress' 924 MLAs. BJP legislators outnumber those of the Congress in the Assemblies of 29 states and two Union Territories including Delhi and Puducherry. But the numbers will change after results of the Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand Assembly elections are declared on December 23.
http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/modi-led-bjp-has-most-number-of-mlas-congress-second-state-assemblies/1/405949.html This is probably the lowest ebb the congress has ever been. Even from 1996 to 2004 when they were out of power they had government at state level all over india. They had government in Assam, Kerala, MP (united) in the mid 90s even before Sonia Gandhi came into the fold. Its not just that they are being replaced by the BJP, even regional parties have displaced them in places like Telangana Orissa etc. They control three major states with population more than 30 million Karnataka Kerala and Assam. Of those Karnataka and Assam voted BJP in the lok sabha just concluded. Only Kerela I can say they are on a firm footing due to the CPM being in even more dire straits. This stat also highlights that regional parties are dominant in India despite the modi wave. Both congress and BJP combined are not even 50% of the total of some 4900 MLAs. BJP rules some 25% of Indias population while the Congress rules some 12%. The BJP number might increase dramatically if they can add UP and Bihar to the list of states they govern. UP alone has more people than all the states governed by the congress combined. With UP and Bihar the BJP will rule some 40% of India at state and central level.

What's wrong with the BJP MLA's of Karnataka. :hysterical:

In a huge embarrassment to the BJP, a party MLA was caught surfing photographs on his cellphone during a serious debate on sugarcane pricing in the legislative assembly on Wednesday. TV footage showed Aurad legislator Prabhu Chavan zooming in on a photograph of Priyanka Gandhi, setting off a firestorm of criticism. As the TV clip went viral, leaving the BJP red-faced, legislative assembly speaker Kagodu Thimmappa said he was contemplating imposing a ban on mobiles in the assembly and would decide after a meeting on Monday. The BJP's discomfiture didn't end there. Another party MLA, UB Banakar, from Hirekerur in Haveri, was found playing Candy Crush Saga on his mobile. Mobile phones are banned in the legislature. In February 2012, three BJP ministers — Laxman Savadi, Krishna J Palemar and CC Patil — were found watching porn in the assembly. They had to resign following the incident. On Wednesday, Chavan, 44, was found flipping his phone when the assembly was debating the sugarcane issue. JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy was speaking then. Unaware that TV crew, seated above the assembly hall, were zooming in on his activity, Chavan was caught surfing pictures — of his family, PM Narendra Modi and Priyanka Gandhi. While watching Priyanka clad in a white shirt and trousers, he zoomed in on the image. Later, he was seen showing the picture to his colleague L A Ravi Subramanya, BJP MLA from Basavanagudi. "We have a legacy. This will only make people say that we (BJP legislators) only do this," said a former minister as party leaders went into a huddle. They counselled Chavan and Subramanya on how to tackle the issue before the media. In a damage-control exercise, Chavan told TOI: "I opened the phone as I got a message. I found Priyanka's picture while watching the photos of my family, Modi and yoga guru Baba Ramdev. As I couldn't read what was written at the bottom of the picture, I zoomed in on the text, not the image." Asked if it was right to use the phone inside the assembly, the MLA apologized. His equally flustered colleague Subramanya claimed that Chavan was showing family pictures. "He had invited me to his daughter's wedding which I couldn't attend. He showed me his family picture and said, 'Dekho, meri beti aur damad'. This lasted three seconds. I asked him to switch off the mobile, and he obliged,'' claimed Subramanya. Earlier in the day, Chavan, from the Banjara community, had come to the assembly wearing a garland of ration cards and carrying a basket of cards on his head tied with a colourful pagdi. He wanted to highlight that ration cards were being misused. Security personnel removed the basket, but not the garland. In the assembly, he alleged that 20,000 ration card holders in his constituency had been issued APL cards when they were entitled to BPL and vice-versa. "When I visit villages in my constituency, I am gheroed by at least 25 women with wrong ration cards being issued," he added. Speaker Thimmappa, while directing food and civil supplies minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to look into the issue, told Chavan to remove the garland and maintain decorum of the House. Rao said the department had weeded out five lakh bogus cards. "If one goes by Chavan's claim of discrepancies in 20,000 ration cards, there should be 40 lakh such documents in all 224 constituencies," he added.

getting reports of good vibes for the bjp in jharkhand but not so in j and k. seems pdp will sail through there
seems most correct from the people of twitter. Jharkhand is in the kitty. Delhi awaits J and K hmm bit of a tightrope from the BJP. Do they support the PDP from the outside to keep the congress out?

Am i the only one who thinks BJP should have no part in forming government with Either the PDP or the NC? PDP for ideological reasons. But anybody else hate the smug face of Omar Abudullah? I feel like punching him so hard?
You are right in that there are ideological reasons but the bigger picture is that if BJP forms the Govt then they really can do a lot of work since they are in power nationally as well. Also, left to themselves, PDP and/or NC will do nothing (as seen by last 5 years of NC).

^ i actually dont mind Omar Abdullah. But some of his smug statements after the elections are just pathetic. Did jack all in his term for the state. Just sat on his chair. Claimed he was secular (and i believe he is secular). Is rejected by the electorate, thumped in one seat and barely scraps by in another by 910 votes and as per reports wants deputy CM wants a rajya sabha seat and 2 cabinet seats in the Modi central government. The truth is Mehbooba Mufti is twice the person Omar will ever be. I may not agree with her ideological base. Built her party up when she and her father left the congress. You can respect that. The NC are just another local congress party. Dynasty established for over 60 years with Sheikh Abdullah----->Grandson Omar in Charge. Sit on ass claim to be secular. Win votes in Kashmir Jammu and Ladakh on the back of it. Dominant force for till the last few elections. In terminal decline with lowest ever seats at 15. The truth is Jammu has saved the Abdullas many times since the rise of the PDP. His game might just be up considering that the BJP have taken his insurance policy in Jammu out of the question. I do believe in 2002 PDP won most seats in the valley. NC scraped ahead on the basis of Jammu.

looks like any tier-2 and tier-3 leaders started joining BJP.. i think BJP in TN is #3 party after ADMK and DMK.. should dump its useless captain and go alone or align with ADMK
Then they will lose the neutral votes I.e Those who don't want DMK or ADMK Captain got 10% in 09 LS elections but since he allied with Amma in 11 his vote share has dropped terribly.Same happened with Vaiko in the past . If BJP really wants to grow in TN they need to stick with the 3rd front

And they must and need to continue that. BJP don't have many options/choices in TN,so they will have to accept everybody to the party for the time being. With the 2 elections results, BJP's next target should be to groom new local leaders, Modi has helped in the election victories but that's not gonna be forever. They need new and powerful leaders in the state for future.

the bjp need to project people who are charismatic the aim should be to replace the dmk in terms of vote share and seats in the next two election cycle as the main opposition party. I do believe that the bjp are currently polling 10%. DMK around 20-25%. So the BJP needs a swing of about 7% in their favour to topple the DMK as being the opposition. They do that with the DMDK /PMK remains to be seen.

PDP is way too close to the separatists for my liking. I would prefer NC (even though they have not done anything in the last 5 years). And as for NC's demands - you really think Modi/Shah will give in to the demands of a party with 0 MPs in Lok Sabha?
