Tiger80 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 GUWAHATI: At least 23 persons, including children and women, were killed and 14 seriously injured by heavily armed NDFB(S) militants in two communally-sensitive districts of Kokrajhar and Baksa of Assam since last night. Shoot-at-sight was ordered on Friday night in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts, falling under Bodoland Territorial Administration Districts (BTAD) area, which bore the brunt of the violence, while indefinite curfew imposed in Chirang district, also under BTAD, as a precautionary measure, police sources said. Curfew went into force from 6pm today to 4am tomorrow in Baksa district's Salbari subdivision and pockets of Mushalpur and Tamulpur subdivisions. A group of 40 NDFB-Songbijit militants, armed with AK-47 rifles, swooped down on Balapara-I village in Kokrajhar district in the early hours today and fired indiscriminately entering three houses one after another killing seven persons on the spot, police said. IGP L R Bishnoi told PTI that two children and four women of the minority community were among the seven persons gunned down. The body of a three-year-old child also killed in the attack was recovered from the area later this morning, police said, adding, 13 persons there were also seriously injured. Later tonight, 12 bullet-riddled bodies, including of five women and a child, were recovered from Nankekhadrabari and Nayanguri villages in Baksa district, police officials said. At least 70 houses of the minority community were torched on the banks of Beki river near the Manas National Park in the district, IGP (Lawa and Order) S N Singh said. Today's attack followed the one by the militants last night when three members of a family, including two women, were shot dead and an infant seriously injured in neighbouring Baksa district last night. The militants carried out the crime after entering the house near Ananda Bazar area in Baksa district also within BTAD, the police said. The army's help has been sought to deal with the situation and troops were staging flag marches to instil confidence among the locals in the violence-affected places and to bring the situation under control, the chief minister's office (CMO) said in a statement today. On reports of thousands of people fleeing their homes to take shelter in neighbouring Dhubri, IGP L R Bishnoi said some people had crossed the river in panic but all of them returned to their villages. In Baksa district, a man identified as Bipin Boro was shot at and seriously injured in his house by two suspected militants at Nizdefeli yesterday, police said, adding, he was admitted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi today held a law and order meeting with top civil and police officials here and instructed the Assam Police to firmly deal with the situation. GUWAHATI: Nine more bodies were recovered from a village in Baksa district early Saturday, taking the toll to 32 in the violence unleashed by NDFB-Songbijit militants in Bodoland Territorial Administration Districts (BTADC) area in Assam. The bodies of the victims, including four children and two women, were recovered from Khagrabari village under Salbari sub-division adjacent to the Manas National Park, official sources said. Bodies of two children were identified as Ilina Khatun and Ariful Islam. Three children, aged between seven and ten years, who were hiding in a forest on the banks of river Beki were also rescued, the sources said. Police arrested 12 people in Baksa in connection with the terror attacks and eight people have been picked up for questioning in Kokrajhar, according to TV reports READ ALSO: Rebels kill 30 in Assam for not voting for Bodos Indefinite curfew was imposed in Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang districts of Assam following the violence. If an entire group of 40 heavily armed terrorists can move around freely and massacre villagers at will, there isn't much of a government/raj to speak of. That should be the more pressing issue.

Sir john Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Assam govt mulls arming Muslims in Bodo areas The Assam government on Sunday was thinking of arming Bengali-speaking Muslims in Bodo areas with licensed guns and asked for applications from villagers even as the situation in Kokrajhar and Baksa returned to normal with no reports of fresh violence. However, security forces intensified their operations against National Democratic Front of Boroland militants with three guerrillas killed in two encounters in northern Assam's Sonitpur and Udalguri districts on Sunday. Police recovered three pistols, two grenades and some incriminating documents from the slain militants. DIG (NR) Subhrajyoti Hazarika confirmed this, saying, "The Sonitpur encounter took place in the morning while the Udalguri incident occurred around 1.15pm on Sunday." The death toll in the current killings by NDFB(Songbijit) group rose to 34 after two more bodies of Bengali-speaking Muslims were recovered from Beki river in Baksa district. Cops also fired in the air to disperse crowds in Narayanguri in Baksa district as they gathered in protest and refused to bury 18 of those killed on Friday, demanding a visit by chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Hours later, the last rites were performed after the border development minister assured them Gogoi would visit the village once the code of conduct was lifted on May 16. Bengali-speaking Muslims have clashed with Bodos four times in the past, the earliest being in 1952 and the most recent being in 2012 when 105 people from both communities were killed in five days. Assam Police additional director general A P Raut said, "The situation is fast improving. We've relaxed curfew in some places today. Tomorrow, we will relax it in Baksa. We have handed over the investigation into the killings to the special task force till NIA probe is cleared by the Centre." State forest minister Rockybul Hussain said Bengali-speaking Muslim villagers should be given licensed arms by the state government for self defence. "Since the home department in Bodoland Territorial Council area is under the state government, the government can provide licensed arms if anyone applies for it." National Highway 37, which wore a deserted look over the last four days, saw traffic once again. But Jamiat-e-Ulema (Hind) leader Mahmood Madani, in Guwahati, demanded the Congress government break its links to the Bodoland People's Front. "People suspect BPF's hand in these killings and in that case, the Congress should not run the government with them," Madani said. The police have arrested 26 people so far and five cases have been registered in connection with the violent incidents in BTAD. A relief camp has been established by the Baksa district administration where 498 people from the violence-affected areas under Gobardhana have taken shelter. Protests continued in Barak Valley of Assam. A dawn-to-dusk bandh in Hailakandi district on Sunday disrupted life. Meanwhile, NIA sources said they will discuss the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) violence with the Assam government on Monday. NIA is likely to sit for a detailed discussion with the state home department in Dispur and draw up a strategy to probe the recent violence in BTAD. On Saturday, Gogoi had said the state government was going to hand over the probe into the killing of 32 civilians to the NIA. "We are sending the official letter to the Union home ministry this evening. An NIA team will be discussing the matter with the state government on Monday. The NIA is going to look into the various FIRs registered in the BTAD areas regarding the violence," said state home commissioner and secretary G D Tripathi. Amnesty International, India, strongly condemned the killing of 32 people in Assam's Kokrajhar and Baksa districts and termed the act as shameful and displaying contempt for human lives. "Authorities in Assam must take action to protect the rights of all communities and bring those responsible for the attacks to justice," it demanded.

And don't paint all Bodos with the same brush. It's similar to calling all Muslims as terrorists. This was done by NDFB, a large portion of their cadres are Christians. They have killed people from other ethnicity in the past regardless of their religion. Also this problem got so huge because of unchecked illegal migration from Bangladesh for 30-40 years. Just a couple of days ago BSF detained 32 people trying to sneak in. These illegals have been used as vote bank by successive govts for petty politics. Now the situation is terrible. Bodos are one of the first people of Assam, they are feeling threatened because of this tribal land encroachment. I don't condone violence but this is a political failure.
