Only thing holding him back is that he doesn't have a top class record in at least one of India, RSA or England. Generally the toughest places for touring batsmen post 2002. Otherwise would be up there. I'd put him just below Kallis.

Sanga is all class. He is without a doubt the greatest batsman SL have ever produced and does stand with the likes of Dravid because of the sheer consistency he has shown in the last few years. Take his stats alone in the past 3 years and he's turned into an absolute beast.

I find it super idiotic to point out at a batsmen if he scored runs against a less mighty team (aka Bangladesh and Zimbabwe). Instead of glorifying it, most just down right looks down at the batsmen as if he did a crime or some sh*t. Scoring 100's against any team (weather it's Australia or Bangladesh) is an achievement of it's own. And to top it of, one even mentioned Pakistan's bowling attack here. I can understand both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but Pakistan? As if Pakistan's bowling attack is a walk in the park.

And in those countries from his overall record his stats are RSA: 35.75, SL: 63.27, Aus: 60.33 and Eng: 41.04. As a pure batsman - RSA: 37.2, SL: 77.87, Aus: 77.28 and Eng: 52.6. Purely as a batsman the only country he averages less than 40 in RSA which as shown he averages in the 37s which although not great is by no means horrible. next worst country as a batsman is the Windies where he averages 42.8, then India at 48.2, then England at 52.6. as a pure batsman he averages 60 or more in 7 out of the 11 countries he's played in, averages over 50 in 8 of them, over 40 in 10 of them. Sanga is a hard one to rate though because as people have said he's played so little not only outside the SC but outside of SL as a pure bat. for example as a pure bat he's played 39 matches in SL, next is UAE where he's played 6 matches.

well i'm not trying to argue either way, the way i see it what it comes down to is he's done well as a pure batsman, whether he's done well enough for enough matches/length of time (however you what to judge it) is up to the individual. as to forgetting about his stats as a pure batsmen, he's played most of his career as a pure batsman and for the most part it's been seen that keeping does affect ones batting consistency usually to the negative side than to the positive side as it's been for AB. you also have to remember sanga played 48 matches as keeper, AB has so far only played 21 as keeper (and AB is in his prime now, sanga wasn't when he kept). again it's up to the individual (when judging his batting) to decide whether to rate sanga based on his overall record or just for the matches when he purely batted. something that makes it difficult for me to judge sanga is that his earlier years which are generally not as good as it's an adjustment period where taken up by him keeping then when he came into his prime the gloves came off so his pure batting record coincides with only his peak. at the same time if he hadn't begun with the gloves maybe he may have started better but these are things that are subjective and speculative and everyone is going to have a different opinion about it.

I have my reservations a bit about him being an ATG, but he's an amazingly proficient and prolific batsman. A pure joy to watch. Sri Lanka's finest.
