Texan Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 In the recent test that SL won, SL's 8th wicket partnership added 149 runs. SL ended up winning by 100 runs. Even when England were looking to save the match in the last innings, England's 9,10 and Jack played 141 balls (23.3 overs) between themselves. India's 9, 10 and Jack are consistently poor. What use is having so much additional support staff when they can't even teach the tail-enders how to get behind the line of the ball and play it on merit rather than just walk outside leg stump and slash.

saneindian Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Laxman won a test for us with Ishant at Mohali vs Aus In the Durban test of 2011 which we won, VVS added 75-80 runs for the 9th wicket with Zak When Dhoni hit that 224, he added some 140 runs for 9th wicket with Bhuvi and last three wickets in that match added 200 runs Its not that our tail does not contribute, but they are not consistent enough especially away from home.

So we need not average but out-standing performances from top order

IIRC Pujara has never played in England though, He and Kohli are the only batsmen who has the technique to play in those condition. Rohit has the best technique among the batsmen but somehow he'll find a way to get Bowled! Rahane didn't performed to expectations last year, ATM he's on brilliant form so expecting some good innings from him. If any two of these four batters clicks then it's Jack and Jill for England and Dhoni can also play his own game then.
vayuu1 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 The thing is its about application and grit,during india's two disastrous tour and the two recent series in New Zealand and south africa,I noticed a common strategy by opponents against our tailenders,that is early on they use to pepper them with short stuff,but at that time indian tail use to whag and I am talking about the before Aug 2011 era,now they just keep it full and just around off stump and slip in odd bouncer our tailenders having poor footwork falls for it and get cleanup ,this has to change. sent from dil se

To face fast bowling in spite of all the protection you need guts to wear some body blows.You need people who are willing to lay everything on the line for the team. What was hilarious guys like Southie and co were bouncing out Indian batsmen.If you cant cope short pitch stiff from trundlers what chance do you have against Morkels and Steyns.

India deserves someone like saha/uthappa to bat. prefer saha in tests as can keep well and is solid. just not given chances. a solid wk will be a huge bonus for us

Our tail does not even try to bat. Every time I saw Zaheer Khan batting in the last 2 - 3 years, we was always backing away outside leg and looking to slash outside off. And he used to bat at 9! At home, they are fairly average and acceptable since the batsmen usually do the job. Away from home though, they are absolutely useless! Remember the Sydney Test of 2008? The last 3 batsmen only had to play two overs to draw the match and one of them was being bowled by a part-time bowler, Michael Clarke, and guess what - all 3 get out to that part-timer. Yes, they are in the team primarily for their bowling, but the whole point of this thread is that all other teams have shown that their tail can apply themselves while batting. Just look at the Australians.... their tail-enders are not just adept at defending, but can even get some handy runs.

I googled about Pujara's performances in England. He has played there when in U19 too. In his debut u19 test(Was in England) he scored 211 opening the innings. Impressive!
