Don't know the fuss around him

He didn't even look visually quick

Just fast arm speed but looked quite slow

Ata ur Rehamanisque

Pakistani's habit to hype...they hyped Shaheen as 150 kph bowler.

Malnourished trundler is bowling 130-134.

Understandable as that's the only portfolio where they have something to show..apart from match fixing, chucking & age fudging.

I doubt it

Starc averages 141 k as his career average speed in tests. And he is the quickest pacer, after Shoaib, Lee and Johnson, who plays tests regularly.

Average speed above 137 kph is quite fast in test cricket in the modern era. And modern era pacers look quicker.

In the 1979 contest, no one could even cross 141 k except Thomson.

frame rate and angles make a big difference. seeing both on the pitch is what counts in the end, because it's the same (human) eyes

Second this, bowling fast through-out the test only came with Akthar and Lee, previously they all use to bowl normal medium pace and when in zone/rhythm or favourable conditions bring-up the speeds.

Visually I always though Tait was fastest amongst Akthar, Lee and Tait. Akthar had that hyper-extension- Do not want to open any can of warms he might have been chucking. And its very difficult to face a chucker even spinners causes issue as a batter you donot know when are they going to release the ball and facing it over 140+ kmph would have been really difficult.

Shaheen bowled his fastest in that T20 WC, before that he was not crossing 145 kmph that often.

He is now bowling in below 140 kmph, Do not know think he is injured. Heard that after shoulder injury it take 1.5/2 years to gain full speed not so sure of knee injury.

This open up the discussion on 2003 WC...where everyone was hitting 140k+ for fun.

I have always felt the speedometer in that tournament was 5-7k higher. Ofcourse that's another discussion which I can't prove now.

Check the 1979 speed competition and the rather low speeds they are clocking.

It's the only one with video evidence.

If those guys were averaging 144 kph then they would have killed a lot of batters, given the poor quality protective gears, poor bats and no practice against bowling machines set at 150 k etc. Not everyone had the defensive technique of a Gavaskar or Boycott.

Thomson is the freak quick well ahead of his era in terms of pace. What the WI quicks had was steep and consistent bounce at good pace for that era.

Agree. The speeds of the fastest year or fastest 2 years can't be taken as normal speeds of that pacer.

Bumrah was clocking 138 k to 148 k / 151 k in tests and ODIs from mid 2017 to late 2019. But his usual speed, something that he retains, is 135 k to 145 k / 148 k and he is such a pacer in my eyes.

Similarly for Shaheen. He too would settle down to 135 k to 145 k over a period of time. Maybe even less, given the poor injury management in Pakistan.

chuckers (not referring to shoaib, etc here) with load up and run up can bowl very fast. baseball pitches get 160 kph with no run up. I think a chucker, if one was allowed to do so, could exceed 170

You can maximise chucking by having two three steps run up or just walk in tothe crease

Having a full hearted runup doesn't maximise chucking

momentum transfer. I think the run up does help

Chucking will increase pace, whether it's 2 steps or 15 steps doesn't matter.

That's debatable, I have tried chucking at times with a proper runup...end up risking injury to my bowling arm.

I guess if you have a longer runup and an action which is non-chuck...it's tough to chuck or generate more pace.

Only times I was able to chuck when I was bowling off spin..it's very easy that way.

But there are folks in my corporate team, who chuck even when bowling medium pace, they find it real tough to bowl with straight arm

Most bowler do not chuck on-purpose, mostly do not even know they are chucking unless they see their recordings.

Bowler with natural chuck can release the ball bit faster, it like throwing and the biggest advantage is that they can change the release point ( in terms of height ) .

Batters are intuned to pre-emptively having an assumption of release point of a bowler but this changes with chuckers.
