Anybody know the viewership numbers for the 2011 WC Indo-Pak Semifinal' date=' I think that was the most-watched sporting event in recent times.[/quote'] From available source on 2011 WC final extrapolated to a guesstimate Average viewership of 490 mil to reach of 980 mil, half of 2008 Olympics opening ceremony bigger than all FIFA WC finals till 2006.

Cricket is a whole day game :) Soccer is a 90 minute game.. May be that is one reason . You catch last few overs.. then you become a viewer
Average - gives whole viewership Reach - gives catching a few mts. This is in favor of Football atm, this is what t20 will change.

India, Pakistan Srilanka, Bangladesh are single sport nations . They don't really have any other sport to cheer for. So anytime cricket is on there will be lot of viewership from these parts. It doesn't mean much. If you take out these countries cricket's viewership will take a significant hit.

35m in Germany' date=' a country where football is the dominant sport, plus they reached the finals. Besides Brazil, i think they are also the largest nation population wise where football is the dominant sport. Even if you multiply that 35 m with 20, it falls WAY below the 1 billion figure that india-pak semifinals managed. I think it's pretty much settled in cricket's favour.[/quote'] looks like it...i think ICC final event will reach 450 mil if Ind and an other big nation is playing ( Eng,Pak,BD) , FIFA will be around 300 Mil - US might make it more in the coming years, Olympics in China is hte only 1 billion event - probably outside of it only 2011 Ind-Pak semi. Brazil is twice the size of Germany - 198 mil - 82 mil i guess. Arg should be a 30 mil country..in comparison Pak is 180 mil BD is 150 odd. Eng is 63 mil SA 55 odd -- rest are tiny around 20 mil each. West bengal with 90 mil will be the second biggest football nation lol.

I dont think you have a handle on reality. :hysterical: Once again, can you tell me why asian cricket playing nation should be 'taken out'? In which kind of reality is the dominant nations 'taken out' when counting viewership? Could you even understand the title of this thread? It's not about geographical spread, it's the absolute numbers.
Forget about 4 countries. Just take INdia out.. it will take a huge hit GLOBAL = INDIA in Cricket GLOBAL = WORLD in soccer so this stat means nothing. whether you like it or not.

Football = say around 15 European nations, 5-10 LAM and African nations , say 5 Arab nations and US/Aus Cricket = 20 Indian nations + 4 SC nations + 4 Windies + 3 African+ UK/Aus looks even to me :--D unless China starts playing Cricket or Football

I am not talking about absolute numbers here. Second post i suggested i don't buy cricket numbers. I am talking about why cricket may have some numbers (though i don't believe that number). 1 billion for Pakistan.. are you kidding.. nothing is official
Final had the highest rating in India not India-Pak match.
NEW DELHI: The final match of the cricket world cup between India and Sri Lanka was watched by almost two out of every three cable & satellite viewers in the country, making it one of the most-watched television events in India ever. According to television viewership rating agency TAM, the final match garnered the highest rating in the entire tournament, beating even the viewership of the semi-final match between India and Pakistan. The final match of the world cup telecast on Star Sports, Star Cricket, and Doordarshan garnered television rating point (TRP) of 23.2, against 21, for the semi-final match. Peak rating of the finals was also a tad higher at 35.9, compared with 34.4, for the India-Pakistan clash. The final match was watched by 135 million viewers across the country in cable & satellite, terrestrial and DTH homes.

LOL. You should read up on how viewership is calculated. The actual figues are arrived at a much later date by TAM. This news report came a day or two after the final and it based on trp. It does not tell how many people watched the match.
Same with Football.. actual numbers will be much higher.

This number is from aMap they say it was watched by 137.6 million viewers in India with cable and satellite connections, this number does not include the state-run Doordarshan and DD1, which reaches more than 90% of the country's 1.21 billion population and 31 million direct-to-home viewers. The average viewership of 2011 final was estimated to be around 400 mil and Ind pak estimated to be more ( fanatically to be 1 billion which is unlikely ).

Average rating for 4 hours viewership.
So it has something to do with number of hours the sport is played. Football rarely lasts over 90 minutes. Despite it was 20 over game.. but people wer waiting for the game to start.. IN theory it was followed full time assumign these numbers are anywhere close to true. I

absolutely, Cricket technically can not ever reach whole viewership ratings of footy unless its t20 IMO, that's the beauty of WC 2011 it seemingly piped 2006 fifa in average rating of viewership which these guys are floating around by 400 to 300 mil respectively. Reach of FIFA should be more than ICC..
