Temujin Khaghan Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 How does that sound to you? I know this wont happen, even if Dhoni retires, he will make sure that GG wont be selected in the team let alone captain but I am not convinced with Kohli either. I wish there is a way GG can be tried for captaincy once. I think he will be a very aggressive Test captain. Right now, Dhoni is in a very desperate situation. He is still saying that Dhawan has no problems with his technique. His ego doesn't let him choose Ashwin over Jadeja; Aaron over Pankaj or GG over Dhawan. He doesn't like to accept that he made a mistake. But still a series win in England is a superb pre-climax to his captaincy before the OZ tour ( where he knows a 0-4 is waiting for him) and the World Cup. So he might pick GG in the next match. I'd say a 20% chance. I hope atleast GG gets picked instead of the supremely talented but still the worst batsman in any possible situation Rohit Sharma at no.6 Once GG is in, I hope he scores some really good runs and secures his place, so that when the time comes for Dhoni to move on, GG might get the nod ahead of Kohli:two_thumbs_up:
GautiMaan Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 We need Gambhir the batsman,if he can reproduce his earlier form the selectors might think about it. How awesome would it be if both gambhir and vijay click:woot:

Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 That is not a bad idea at all. He is captain material for sure. But I am sure Dhpni won't pick him in playing 11. Because if he plays and gets some runs he immediately would be in reckoning for captain. So Dhoni is going to continue with Dhawan only for rest of the seriws.
rkt.india Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Is there an option of GG scoring runs first? He is already 33, too late to be a captain.
bowl_out Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Ashwin can deliver with bat and ball in the subcontinent. And can bat reasonably well overseas. He is a quick thinker, and likes to experiment. If anything, I would attribute part of his poor overseas performance to Dhoni's defensive tactics. If he gets a couple of good games, he is my first choice for captain replacing Dhoni
bowl_out Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Unfortunately, I don't see Dhoni going out at least until WC 2015, which means we have to bear with him during the Aus tour later this year. The simple reason BCCI will give is, Dhoni needs to adjust to the conditions in Aus and prepare himself for the World cup, and that there is no next choice of captain immediately... Plus he won the Lord's test

renjith Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 gg is not a long term option both for opening position and captaincy. coz dhavan is in very poor form, we can use gg as a short term option in last 2 tests. but for long term, we must look at the younger lot. kohli is the best available option for captaincy now. pujara is so laid back i don't think he is captaincy material at all. has aswin lead any team?
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Is there an option of GG scoring runs first? He is already 33' date=' too late to be a captain.[/quote'] Dont think 33 is too late for captain. Batsmen easily go up to 36-37 and he yet to turn 33. Though I agree that he has to score runs first which he can't do sitting on the bench.

Texan Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Gambhir is probably best suited for the captaincy role. But, he doesn't have a place in the team. Ashwin is another captaincy contender. But being a spinner, it would be very restrictive to have that person as the captain especially away when we only want to play one spin bowler (whoever is in form).
sensible-indian Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I don't want Gambhir in captaincy role. Gambhir's batting is unknown now (he isn't going to peak again). If you make him captain and he flops, you guys will be screaming for his exclusion which won't happen. We would be stuck with an useless opener. So best option right now would be Kohli or Pujara. Its a safe bet. Even if they aren't the best tacticians out there, they can do well as long as the playing XI is selected properly and they know how to manage bowlers.
sensible-indian Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I have a feeling Ashwin is the real deal when it comes to captaincy. For that to happen, Kohli must become captain and when he flops, Ashwin has a shot (assuming he has cemented his Test spot for all conditions). I could be wrong.
renjith Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 a good reason for why aswin should not be made captain Ashwin is another captaincy contender. But being a spinner, it would be very restrictive to have that person as the captain especially away when we only want to play one spin bowler (whoever is in form). a good reason why gg should not be made captain. this can be more back-firing than aswins case. Gambhir's batting is unknown now (he isn't going to peak again). If you make him captain and he flops, you guys will be screaming for his exclusion which won't happen. We would be stuck with an useless opener. that leaves kohli and pujara. looking at the presence kohli has, its a no-brainer between kohli and pujara. but at the same time we will be risking kohli the test batsman as he is still trying to establish himself in the test team.
Sooda Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 ^I dont think its a no brainer- yes Kohli has 'presence' and perhaps a better natural leader. But we do not know how they rate tactically. Also if I am not mistaken, Che has more experience as captain with A teams and state. Last but not least, Che has been a better test batsman and his place is more settled. This discussion is all academic, but GG is not a real contender for me, he was in 2011 but now he is not even a first XI player
Sachin=GOD Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 No. He is already 33 and at this point he's not even a certainly in the team. We have a young team so IMO we need a young captain as well - Pujara. He can't do worse than M$D (I mean, NOBODY can do worse than being whitewashed twice and captaining in the pathetic manner that M$D has been for quite a long time now).
CSK Fan Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Thing about Gambhir is, he is a gritty customer in the Ganguly mode. So IMO, not only can he come back to form despite his technical faults but might do well as a captain too. But because of this threat, Dhoni is unlikely to play him in the series

GG at the age of 33 can't be a long term arrangement.
