Since ICF seems to be a place of techies, wanted to create a thread on Linux queries ( mods kindly merge if there is a thread already ). I had been using linux on my old laptop due to old specs ( low RAM ) and got used to it a bit. I had used Ubuntu for about 2-3 years and somehow Unity threw me away and I converted to Linux Mint when I bought a new laptop. Currently I am on Linux Mint 17 Qiana Cinnamon edition and use it much more than Windows 8.1 in dual boot ( had to struggle to get around the secureboot :(( ) Are there any linux lovers here and specifically the Mint distro? How do you compare Cinnamon with Xfce, MATE and KDE? Also, would you recommend any alternate software for the below that I am using currently? Some of them are working fine for me but I like to try out different options in Linux ( as I am sure nothing will be messed up :--D permanently ) Browser - I use Chrome mostly ( for built in flash ) but have FF and Chromium also Office - Libre Office suite ( mostly for viewing only ). For editing, I go back to Windows ( for MS office ). Is Openoffice better? Cloud - This is where my options are limited. I tried to install clients for clients for google drive, One drive and Dropbox and only dropbox works as expected. Ubuntu One was discontinued else it was working well too. Any tweaks or universal clients that work with GD, One Drive? Twitter Client - I use Choqok. Pidgin with plugins is a mess for me. Any other options that allow inline image view? Music/Video player - Banshee, Rhythmbox and VLC Podcast - gPodder. Any other recommendations for accessing internet radio? Mail - Thunderbird Torrent - Transmission Image Editing - Gimp ( I only scratch the surface of its features :winky: ) Any suggestions for desktop blogging clients ( like Windows Live writer) ? Any desktop/widget customization software? I tried Compiz and liked it but had messed up some 3D hardware acceleration settings :((...I removed the package and am scared to install again More questions later as I seem to assume that there are lot of linux users here...

ganesh is linux user i think but not coming online much .. i actually want to try it out too but never got time :D
Try as dual boot with about 20-30 GB partition or atleast as Live CD/USB...Very very stable and all software is free :--D...I used to love Ubuntu with GNOME but Unity was an interface for touch enabled devices that Canonical tried to push on our throats

I've practically only used Linux distributions for my work in the past few years. Other operating systems simply aren't even close to Linux when it comes to usefulness for scientific computing.

Blender for animation. Compiz is running for me.. Wonder this is what cause me random freezes. Also chrome has a weird issue. Suddenly it would stop responding to keyboard. Firefox has no such issues. 14.10 is still unstable for me.
