How good Ranatunga as an ODI batsman?

Don't think so. Dravid struggled to keep pace with the game when he played. 39.16 @ 71 is rather slow for the era (27.76 @ 74.8) he played. Arjuna averaged 35.8 @ 78' date= where he was leaps and bounds ahead of the scoring rate in his era (27 @ 68.8). As Dravid was a way superior batsman in tests, Ranatunga was a class ahead in ODI game compared to Dravid.
Completely agree. dravid never was a limited overs great.

One of the greatest batsman in ODIs
one of the most over-rated batsmen in ODIs. Without doubt a great in tests, and a big hearted player for India. He survived in ODIs primarily because of his test performances, and also because of his willingness to keep wickets. That made him sort of an allrounder.

His style of batting actually complemented our batting lineup. He made it to this format primarily because of tests and did survive for a while because of that but not his entire career. He was a gun player for us in world cups and you dont win player of the series for nothing he always delivered in the bigger stage

Dhoni also sticks up to his teammates. He once had threatened to quit if RP Singh was not picked.
I think he was more annoyed about the team selection meeting being leaked rather than him sticking up for RP Singh/Irfan Pathan.

No batsman would score 10000 runs while struggling to keep up with the scoring pace that too in Indian batting line up. He was the man of crisis for us. You can always bank on him when in trouble and we utilised his batting to his strength. So there was no pressure on him to go at sr of 90 and thats simply not his role' date=' having said that he also had his share of some quick fire innings like the 23 ball 50 against kiwis. dravid is leagues ahead of him.[/quote']You must be joking. The quick innings Dravid played you could count. But for Ranatunga it was the norm. Quite regularly he tore apart attacks in last ten overs. Dravid survived because it was Indian line up who had quick scorers. Ranatunga was the only batsman apart from Aravinda who took to the bowlers in his side.

Lol not sure who is joking here :P going by your words one would expect him to have as good a sr as Jayasurya's :giggle:

His SR was extremely good compared to the era he played in. 1.133 times as the rest. For Jayasuriya it's (91.2 for SJ, 73.36 for the rest.) 1.24. For Dravid it's 0.949. Let's put it in this way. Adjusted SRs (SR across all ODIs * player's SR / SR of all batsmen during player's career) Jayasuriya = 90.2 Ranatunga = 82.38 Dravid = 69.0 Ranatunga is not much behind jayasuriya. Aravinda had this value aroud 85. There's not even comparison here with Dravid. Way, way below class of Ranatunga in ODIs.

For Javed Miandad = 73.32, Azharuddin = 77.8 Note that Ranatunga had an almost same average and much better adjusted SR than Azhar who was a leading ODI batsman at the time. Bottom line: Dravid is nowhere close to being a good ODI bat.

^ Cherry picking' - let me do the same. Ranatunga averages lesser than Dravid. Dravid has more 100s, 50s than Ranatunga. Dravid scored more runs than Ranatunga and played more games than Ranatunga shows his longevity. Rahul Dravid's highest score is more than Ranatunga. Dravid also took 2x times more catches than Ranatunga which shows he was a better fielder (not that required any statistical picture). Dravid also played as a specialist WK which clearly shows his all-round abilities. Most importantly, Dravid could last a ODI innings without runners and could run better between the wickets. There's clearly no comparison with Dravid as he trumps out almost everything. SL standards may be different.

Good point. I dont think these days with runners not being allowed, Ranatunga could have even played. He was a good ODI bat though.

As I said in another post dravid's role is not to play the quick innings. He was our man for crisis and if sr is the only criteria to measure a batsman's legacy then viru is the best batsman from India! You know what it doesn work that way. Despite having an inferior sr we couldn drop him from the ODIs because he added some value to our lineup providing the much needed stability. And most importantly you cant expect dravid to avg in the 20s for many calendar years like ranatunga did he had many ups and downs in his career. Dravid is simply leagues ahead of this guy

Lol are you seriously judging batsman by sr alone ? Dude all these three are better than your ranatunga by a fair margin. No wonder I'm debating with a guy who compared afridi to viru :cantstop:

And Afridi should be one of the greatest ODIs bats ever, just for his out of world strike rate.

Well if Ranatunga played in a team with better batsman, I bet him to beat Dravid hands down in ODI game. If you condiser changes in SRs over years, Dravid looks pedestrian compared to Arjuna. No point in getting worked up on his antics, because that is what he was. He was the predecessor Asian ***** to Ganguly and successor to Miandad. But he was a man of principles. Never did a single commercial in his life despite the popularity he had. And then in 80s and early 90s he was not fat.
Dravid the ODI batsman is a non-starter. Bugger would never have played so many one day games, but for his shoddy keeping to keep his place. He exudes no confidence whatsoever, as a one day player. Ranatunga the one day bat is a class act without a doubt. Very effective.

Instead of going on and on on about Dravid's role as a ODI batmsan and the reasons defending his lower S/R, how about him being incapable of raising his S/R. No one would settle for a lower S/R, if they really had the game to score freely. Dravid simply is dour for most part as a ODI batsman. That is the bottom line.

The only reason he didn look all that effective was he was playing in the same XI as sachin and ganguly
