Vicky donor was a fiction entertainer, not a realistic movie and was a hit. Most of these so called realistic films are pseudointellectual stuff example lunchbox. Regarding Chennai express in Bengal, why would you do that. Films are made to the taste of people, what gets them to theatres. So will make what they like to watch. But madcap entertainers work at most places. Even below average entertainers like main tera hero with no real star value are a hit while critically acclaimed pseudo stuff like citylights flops. Film like Shahid struggle to get their investment back.
Lunchbox was a wonderful movie. Just because you like to watch movies such as Krish doesn't make these movies pseudo-intellectual. This is pretty much like a kid's mindset. Say he doesn't prefer a cartoon, its quiet hard for him to accept that others have a different opinion/interest towards it. This was for your pseudointellect comment. I get utter bored watching thrash like Krish, Dhoom or Chennai Express, I also call them stupid and waste of time but at the same time can accept the reason people follow them. Nothing quiet wrong there but its not a mutual feeling for your lot. Watch a realistic movie- as you call it, and you are a pseudointellect. I feel connected watching such movies. How exactly is Vicky Donor a fiction?

Lunch Box was really lame....The heroine was cute though :giggle: and the ending was :WTF:....Had great potential but personally I thought it was overrated

I didn't like Dhoom 3, neither I said Krrish3 was a great film, but if such films make 200 carores then there is something a lot of people liked. Chennai express, i didnt even watch on TV. I dont like such dilms. Regarding Lunchbox, yeah, it was pseudo. Every slow doesnt mean a good film. Its basic tiffin plot is flawed. Being slow, showing some emotions, realistic setting and dialogues dont make it a good film when plot is already flawed. You want to know real good film then Ship of Theseus is what is called a good cinema.

Boss, I have watched enough movies to judge one. I agree with Maniac about the ending, din't quiet gel well with the story and how exactly is it flawed? Enlighten us. And I get your point, I have myself seen people making a big deal out of a movie because of the extra realism, and have watched such movies with pointless plot but by no means would I include Lunchbox in that. You can call it pseudo, but I loved it! It was bliss. Unrealistic plot of sperm donation? You are taking the realistic tag way too far.

There is only a certain set of audience that likes realistic type of boring movies, not most of the people. For them any film, which is slow, filmed realistically, has a lot of darkness is great. People watch movies to get entertain, to laugh no matter how silly they were that is why even poorest of the comedy films like Bol Bachan does 100 crores and not get bored and depress. I am not just talking about fiction and fantasy. Even in South, most big films have nothing real in them. These realistic films are made just to keep such awards in their mind.
Most of the Hollywood movies are realistic ones and they do pretty well world wide.

They do. And here we are talking about 'Bollywood' in specific, not India in whole. In Telugu, the more unrealistic, the better. (current movies)

Not a fan of these realistic films. Why would one watch films to see reality which we already see in our day-to-day life. Why would one want to get depressive seeing depression of people in the films.
Why did you like Ship of Theseus then?

I said I am not fan but did not say I will never like any film. You like something or someone even if you are not a fan. Good films are liked, good or bad. Most of these so called realistic films are bad. Another example, Kahani which is made in a realistic way but that realism is fake. Few of my favorite films....The Prestige though it had its flaws, The inception, Mullholland Drive, Zakhm, Tammanna, Sangharsh, Minority Report, The Matrix, Yuva, A Wednesday, Awarapan, Children of Men, Donnie Darko, The man who wasn't there, Pulp Fiction, The silence of the lambs, Seven, Memento, Insomnia, Drive, Enter Nowhere, The sixth sense, Unbreakable, X-Men series. The kind of films I like most are Surreal, dark, crime thrillers, films which have a bit of mystery, intrigue that make you think.

What is so intellectual or pseudo intellectual about lunchbox? I just saw it as a simple love story.

Yeah, then that is fine. But people were portraying it as once in a lifetime movie, asking to it to be send for Oscars as an Indian entry, especially, the banners associated with it likes of Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar. This writer of the film had a one-line idea which was not researched or thought about and wrote a full script on an idea which was flawed from the start.

Realistic, original, meaningful type movies will never appeal to masses and they will never make tons of money. They are made because the filmmakers feel strongly about the subject and think it will make for a great story. They are basically meant for a small audience who appreciates good storytelling, good acting, writing etc. In India, we basically have no paying audience who watches these movies and so its almost impossible to get these type of films made. No film industry can survive on these type of movies because cinema is a commercial medium and it costs lots of money to make each movie, so the producers have to make a profit on their investment. Otherwise, the industry will get shut down very soon. Most people in any country go to movies because they want to be entertained and have a good time. The most popular genres are action, comedy, romance etc. The sensibility - choice of characters, stories, acting style etc. - varies depending on their culture and taste.

In India, especially in Hindi film industry, mostly new directors make such movies to garner some attention towards them through film festivals and award functions that is what they are made for. Films like Ship of Theseus are made in English. Why would you do that if you are making a film for Indian audience. This in itself tells that it was just for a niche audience. Agree about everything else. That is what point was too.

Not just to get some attention. Some filmmakers are passionate about the stories they want to tell and tell them in a way which is closer to their sensibilities and do it in a realistic, honest enough way so that it makes an impact on the audience and make them feel something or think about something or reflect on it. Its essentially treating cinema as a form of expression or art rather than just throwing different things at the screen with the hope that something will appeal to the audience which is the nature of commercial cinema in India.

I said most people and certain set of audience. These 100 and 200c-esque movies won't be a hit in a place like Kerala or West Bengal. Hindi movies do run but make a regional movie of that sort in these places, they won't earn a dime. And through a personal perspective, 'unrealistic' movies in Bollywood, not India, tend to be stupid. Even most 100c movies are realistic till some point, not fictions or fantasies.
The bit about Kerala isn't really true. Maybe in the 70s or 80s definitely not now. Vijay and Surya always have huge following in Kerala and most of their movies belong to that category . Suresh Gopi did most of his hits with that type of mindless action films. Even some of Jarayam's big hits were mindless comedies like the Golmal stuff. And watching some of Pritivraj movies :wall: In fact it was so refreshing to see Drishtyum become such a massive hit. Hopefully it sets a trend in Malayalam movie making.

There is realistic movies and then there are art movies . The latter ones always depress you and coat it in the name of reality. I think most of us enjoy realist movies (without the masala items) with intelligent making but I doubt too many enjoy these art movies like the one mentioned above. We see in reality most of these stuff themed in so called in art movies .I don't see why should we get more depressed spending time and money watching these ones

70s, 80s and 90s. Tons of bad ones from 2000s until 2008-09. Some very good movies nowadays.

Vijay, Surya and even some Telugu guys movies are hit there but my point was Malayalam movies. Which Suresh Gopi mindless films are massive hit there? There just run for 50 days and as I said it was during the Late 90s and early & mid 2000s period.
Even some of Jarayam's big hits were mindless comedies like the Golmal stuff. And watching some of Pritivraj movies :wall:
Nonsense. Which Jayaram's hits were comedies like Golmaal? His movies now are utter rubbish but they barely run for 2 weeks. Name some mindless Jayaram comedy hit. Please do! One of the best genres in Malayalam is its comedy hits. Way too hard to swallow that statements- Jayaram hits were like Golmal. And the last Prithviraj hit was Mumbai Police and Indian Rupee before that. All the bad ones failed. His resurgence was through Mumbai Police after a set down post Indian Rupee. I honestly don't like watching Prithviraj as an actor but his hit movies are mostly good.
In fact it was so refreshing to see Drishtyum become such a massive hit. Hopefully it sets a trend in Malayalam movie making.
Last one was Mumbai Police, Spirit and Indian rupee. There are rarely any movies released nowadays like the mid 2000s. Some directors still make such movies but they are hardly run there.
