Doesn't matter what he feels Dhoni has said earlier that Rahane is doing his job & having Rohit at 4 will give the team more depth when he can rotate the strike when there is no fielding restrictions.He can't do that in PP overs.Plus I rate him higher than Rayudu.

Any half decent bats look good opening in LOIs which is the easiest place to bat ..field restrictions and no pressure . You can have a bad technique and still score runs . You can bat at your own pace even if your team is chasing 300 . Even hacks like sarfaraz looks good opening

Good post, but hard to believe that you have to go all the way back to 2007, 2008 to iterate his worth... He blew off his middle order opportunities.... had a decent run as an opener in Champions Trophy, but failed ever since (except for the maniac Aus tour of India)... His struggle in SA makes me shudder to think what he will do as an opener in Aus.... He kills the momentum except when playing on flat roads... And worse is his inability to rotate strike with close-in fielders during Power Plays....his scoring pattern while opening is generally 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 4... making it look like his strike rate is close to 80+... Not rotating strike builds pressure on the partner... I would still have him in the squad, but to play at No. 4... Rahane has failed as a middle order batsman, and surely the best contender for the opening slot.... I see it simply this way: Opening slot : Rohit vs Rahane.... Rahane wins No. 4 : Rohit vs Rayudu..... Rohit wins So my top 4 would be Rahane, Dhawan, Kohli, Rohit Given, Rohit's exposure at the top order now, I think (and hope) he will be a more mature middle order batsman in ODIs... With the open field, he will be able to settle in better, and build an accelerate later when needed

Test Debut against West Indies bowling attack of that time and at home conditions where Ashwin also scored a Hundred is not a thing I would be proud of and if you look at his later innings, he scored one half century in next 5 innings at an average of 30. 6. He has performed superbly only against West-Indies and a couple of good matches against Australia, and has failed against almost all of the other teams to really make a mark. 20s and 30s at a strike rate of 50-60 isn't what I would call a great start. 7. Rohit opening at one end really puts tremendous pressure on his partners to score at a good pace. He keeps on blocking those balls and blocks the scoreboard too that makes the other batsman hit and get out. 8. As I said, in this part of the country no one really likes Rohit.
