rkt.india Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Ian Chappell, the former Australia captain, has said that India should look at a five-bowler combination for the fourth and final Test against Australia in Sydney with three quicks and two spinners. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Chappell said that the India attack lacked an allrounder like Shane Watson who could pitch in with 10-12 overs in a game. India opted for a four-man attack in the first three Tests of the series with Karn Sharma the sole specialist spinner in Adelaide and R Ashwin replacing him for Brisbane and Melbourne. According to Chappell, left-arm spinner Akshar Patel could also be an option for India, depending on the team's assessment of his potential and readiness. Akshar was brought in to the squad in place of Ravindra Jadeja, who returned home after injuring his shoulder. "I probably favour a 3-0 result. I think what India have got to do, I don't know if they've got the players to do it, but I think they could go with an attack of three quickies and two spinners," Chappell said. "I don't know much about Patel who has come out to replace Jadeja, but I think if they can go for three quickies and two spinners, that would be the right combination for Sydney. "If they think Patel's got some potential, maybe that's the time to get him in because I think they haven't got anyone unlike Australia who have had Mitchell Marsh and you've got Shane Watson, who can give you eight, 10, 12 overs in a game. If Mitchell Marsh is there with Shane Watson, you can get more. India don't have anyone that can do that. They've got a couple of part-timers, but nothing serious. I think they've probably got to come up with the combination of five bowlers and the combination has got to be three quicks, two spinners." Chappell also said that India's bowling strategies could be hampering the attack from consistently bowling good deliveries. "I think they have a chance (to take 20 wickets) but they're not given the proper chance. I'm not sure of the consistency and the ability to consistently bowl good balls," he said. "But some of the things they're being asked to do don't allow them to be consistent. When you're being asked to bang the thing into the track regularly, and suddenly you've got to bowl good line and length, that's not an easy thing to do. You know, a guy like Glenn McGrath, who was known for his accuracy, found that a very difficult thing to do. For inexperienced bowlers, it's almost impossible. "If India look back on the first three Test matches, they've made 400 in the first innings in each match. Now if you do that, particularly when touring Australia, it's not an easy thing to do. And you haven't won a Test match, then you start to think, well, the bowlers are not really doing their job, but certainly they've batted well enough at times. Obviously, there have been late collapses. But they've batted well at times enough to at least get one win in the series but they have nothing to show for it." I have not opened this thread to discuss 5 bowlers issue, but for the bold part. It does require a discussion.
bulbul Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I don't think its big deal to play 5 bowlers in dead rubber. Only problem is except 3 batsmen rest are all out of form. 2 spinners required any way, but playing 3 pace bowlers may not help much
MK55 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Ya Chappell's correct. There are some bowlers who are accustomed to bowling short. Morne Morkel come to mind. Asking Umesh/Aaron to do that when they are still trying to cement their place and to find a length they are consistent with bowling, was asking too much. We really don't understand how to get the best out of our bowlers
GolGappe Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Out of sorts Pujara, zilch contribution from sixth batsman, new wkt-keeper, and tail-enders not contributing with the bat. Dropping a batsman to play an extra bowler will weaken the batting drastically. Shastri does have a point. A medium pace all-rounder is worth his weight in gold in test matches.

You dont do that. No team does that. There is only one designated bowler who does that. Mitch for Aus, Broad for England, Morkel for SA mostly. Only, Aaron has a good bouncers in this team. Ishant can get them right here and there. Also, one needs to have enough pace to trouble batsmen on bouncers.

I agree, Aaron seems the best in the current side at bowling bouncers but even he is not able to bowl 4/5 well directed short balls in an over. What made it worse was that Dhoni not only made all of our bowlers to bowl short regardless of their ability but also might have instructed them to bowl 4/5 short balls in an over.
zep1706 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I have been saying this since the beginning of the South Africa tour if not earlier. With 4 bowlers and no genuine all rounders India can't take 20 wickets. In fact most sides can't unless it is a completely bowling pitch. India must play a 5th bowler who can bat a bit. With Ashwin and Bhuvi they will have to be brave and play without that extra batsman. You are losing anyway so what's the harm in trying.
Shivaji bhonsle Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 He is spot on rkt. Hopefully Virat doesn't ask our bowlers to bowl short suddenly and lose line , length and rhythm.
kosingh Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 If we go that way I prefer 3 pacers and 2 spinners rather than 4 pacers and 1 spinner on these modern Australian tracks which are becoming increasingly unhelpful for pacers.

You could rotate with part timer. But that also means you are easing the pressure off .

Adding Rohit sharma weakens the batting much more drastically than adding a bowler.

But overloading bowlers on unhelpful surfaces will cause enoromous damage like what we saw in England. In Two Tests Dhoni made sure they were totally wipde off. Worst part was Dhoni had a 5th bowling option and yet adamantly did not use him. By the time we played third test they were all dead and buried. Besides India's sixth batsman in the current squad is no better than a bowling all rounder.

Flat pitches i agree we need a 5th option whi can bowl atlest 10 to 12 overs per day.But here best option is to go with 2 spinners + 2 pacers & couple of pie chuckerz. Even in unhelpful surface going with 5 out and out bowlers is risky tactic with our batting in overseas condition.
Gunner Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Yadav Aaron Ishant Ashwin Karn / Akshar This bowling attack provides the best chance to take 20 wickets and win the Sydney Test.

Scoring 1000 runs won't get us wickets. With worn out attack even Starc, Harris might score a 100. You play for the draw from the get go with 4 bowlers. India had bowlers like Sehwag, Tendulkar, Ganguly in 2000s. Current part timers are well below par. As the series progresses our bowling becomes worse and worse on top of it.
Shivaji bhonsle Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Did anyone read what the op wanted to discuss.?..:giggle:

G_B_ Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 hmm might as well its not as if our number 6 has been rolling in runs
Vijy Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 5 bowlers is definitely a must. MSD wasn't a good Test bat overseas, but he was better than our previous keepers when it came to batting. Hence, if we are to play 5 bowlers in the future, would like to see the following: a) A keeper who can bat, and bat well, at No.6. Saha's FC record suggests that he should be capab,e but we'll have to see. Perhaps the next-gen keepers such as Samson or Bains or Bharat can do the job. b) Have at least 2-3 bowlers who can bat (otherwise the tail would be too long). I'd suggest Bhuvi and Ashwin, along with Rishi Dhawan. The other 2 can be Umesh Yadav and ??? (someone).
