Dravid: Bowling cupboard in Ranji not well stocked

I made a thread abt this a couple of months ago on how the standard of bowling in Ranji was terrible and the average speeds were around 75mph for seamers. This at a time when arguably we have the most talented set of young pacers at any time in our history. The simple issue is that we just have way too many freakin teams so every Jaydev, Vinay and Praveen gets to play. need to consildate into lesser number of teams so as to increase competition for places. also the excessive green on the pitches means that these trundlers get bucketload of wickets without displaying any real level of skill. The aim should be for some green and more bounce.

You really believe that?

in terms of pure talent and raw speed we haven't had better set of pacers than the current ones/ (post 1999 atleast) before our pacers were never even thought of potential trump cards or bowlers who could put the opposition on the backfoot. performance on the pitch is not under discussion in this point. its the potential. The current set has the potential to reach heights which guys like nehra, Praveen, rp singh, agarkar etc never did

Yes. He should replace Narwal. Aniket Chaudhary' date=' the tall Rajasthan left armer is also doing well. Navdeep Saini looked good too. There are few bowlers who aren't exactly quick but decent.[/quote'] Any idea about Aniket's speed. He was 125-130 kmph bowler last season. He is quite tall but very bulky. If he can bowl around 135-140, then as a left armer he is a sure shot selection.

He too needs to get fitter, will certainly gain bit of pace.

I had forgotten about that super talent, who can forget his test debut in SA in 2010 Jaydev-Unadkat.jpg

Guys like Marchant de Lange, Cummins, Pattinson, Starc etc. are in their early 20s and were almost as quick some years back when they started as they are now. Small increments are possible but 10k is quite substantial. That's why the initial years when a guy starts bowling is critical. Right guidance in developing an action that can help him sustain pace is necessary. Also, after spending some years the bowler will get accustomed to his action and if he is not generating pace before he is not likely to generate it later as well. Fitness can bring in small increments but cant transform a 125k bowler to 140k

Steve Finn started off as a 130 to 140 k pacer and became 140 to 150 k for a couple of years. Harris was a medium pacer when in his 20s. In his 30s he bowls 130 to 145 k.He himself has talked about this aspect. There are other examples too.

There might be some examples but that is a rare occurrence. Steve Fin had made his test and ODI debut in 2010 and 2011 resp. He was always a bowler who bowled in the lower 140s except may be when he was making a comeback from some injury. I remember him clocking 90+ during England's tour of India in 2011 which was within a year of his debut. He had clocked 94 miles in that series.

Even Stuart Binny has increased his pace as per his own accord by working on his leg muscles  That is why he made it to our WC squad! On topic though, it is a globally known fact that among the major test playing nations we have traditionally had the worst bowling attack (specially seamers). There is no indication of any of that changing any time soon. We can only dream of having guys like Steyn, Morkel, Johnson, Harris, Anderson, Broad, Boult, and the many other sensational Pakistan quicks of the recent past. Dravid's concern about the bowling cupboard not being well stocked should first be a concern of having a bowling cupboard.... because we don't have one (let alone having one that is 'not well' stocked). Our cricketers just don't care enough about bowling to be encouraged towards greatness.

Aniket can bowl 132 now if he puts effort, need to increase effort ball upto 140. That is achievable I believe.

I personally preferred Abhimanyu Mithun :cantstop: Good God we have seen some bad seamers in national colors! Atleast we have come a long way!

Not talking about Pankaj in particular but if I bowler has the capacity to bowl at a higher pace and his holding himself back, then that's a different issue. One example is Ishwar Pandey whom I have seen bowl at 135-140 but has now become slow. Also some bowlers have this tendency of bowling quicker in limited over formats. But for bowlers who are perpetually slow, a 10k increase in pace is not going to be easy and is in fact quite rare.

Bowling action and a bit of technical issues can be obstacles in generating your optimum pace, like it was in case of Pankaj. Fitness is another thing that can be a problem.

The 90 mph + speeds that you remember in India were in the January 2013 tour when ODIs were played. He started off bowling 130 to 140 k. I saw him in tests in 2010. He did not even touch 140 k most of the times. Was bowling 130 to 135 k mostly. I remember reading articles at that time on how a medium fast bowler had used bio-mechanists to improve his action and increase a lot of pace.
