"I follow Ranji Trophy cricket and cricket in India, and there's not a lot of talent. The cupboard, unfortunately in the bowling department, is not as well stocked as we would like it to be. Hopefully it can change and things like this can change in six months, eight months, sometimes you can find a young, exciting fast bowler somewhere or a super spinner somewhere, that happens. But the reality is that we were all excited, before the Australia tour. We had got 2-3 guys, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, all bowling 140-plus; there's always Ishant Sharma; Bhuvi [bhuvneshwar Kumar] has come along a long way," Dravid told ESPNCricinfo on Monday. However, Dravid does not feel that the Test future of the above bowlers is over and that they still make an impact if they quickly learn and improve their game. "I'm not saying that these guys are finished. There are clearly lessons that they need to learn, areas that they need to work on. You could have the same set of bowlers, but if they improve and get better, I think that's the ideal situation, because when I look around the place, I don't necessarily see many bowlers shouting out or banging the door open at the moment to say, look, pick me, I will do the job for you in Test cricket," he added. Regarding India's Test captaincy, Dravid felt that Virat Kohli presents a dependable long-term option for the board to invest in him."I think it's early days for Virat. But he's shown that he can lead. One of the biggest pluses during the Australia series was his own performance. The worst thing would have been, for someone like Virat, who was the obvious successor to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to have not performed and not been sure of his own place, which was one of the concerns after the tour of England. But that's not the case, now we know that Virat's a shoo-in candidate for the captaincy, he's someone whom Indian cricket can plan long-term with, and that's what they should do. Results will take care of themselves, with the right plans you're making. "If Virat can do that process, he'll find that the results will follow, because in a country like India, with the number of people playing, talent's got to be there. It's just a question of finding it," he said. With a sixth overseas series loss in succession, India slipped to No 7 in the Test rankings but the batting legend who turned 42 on Sunday, said that the dwindling rankings should not be a concern as the team is expected to rise in the table courtesy of playing more home series than away tours in the next two years. "I'm not a big one for rankings. Whether we're seventh or fifth, for me that doesn't really make a huge difference. Our bowling has been a big let-down, and I think if you are not consistently bowling well, if you don't have world-class bowlers in both pace and spin, then you're going to slide down the rankings because you're not going to produce results. "We are not going to be playing overseas for a long time, so our rankings will definitely improve. We will perform well in India. We've got the batting line-up now, we've got some very good spinners who can bowl well in these conditions, so if I were to talk 24 months from now when we haven't played a lot overseas, then I might be talking about 'oh, great, we're up there in numbers one and two'. What matters is how well we do when we go overseas from now, and what are the steps that we're taking to address some of the issues that have become pretty evident over the last 12-14 months," he said.

As a result, we end up having to "teach" bowlers things like accuracy at an international stage. It's been said by many people that the problem is the diluted competition. We need to promote Duleep or re-invent IPL as a 3-format tournament to allow for a level between Ranji and International. The question is ... who will actually do something about it?

As a result, we end up having to "teach" bowlers things like accuracy at an international stage. It's been said by many people that the problem is the diluted competition. We need to promote Duleep or re-invent IPL as a 3-format tournament to allow for a level between Ranji and International. The question is ... who will actually do something about it? Problem isnt we dont have accurate bowlers, but we dont have complete bowlers. Most accurate pacers lack pace. Most quick pacers lack accuracy.

Facepalm No. He can bowl in mid to high 130s, has clocked 140 last season, but he isnt ready to play for Indian team. lacks the stamina to sustain pace. Aniket Chaudhary, the tall Rajasthan left armer is also doing well. Navdeep Saini looked good too. There are few bowlers who aren't exactly quick but decent.

( hit the deck with reasonable regularity ) If there are not many accurate 135 k + pacers then this is the next best alternative. Like Pandey, Veer Pratap, Saini, Raj Kiran. Also ...we have an accurate 135 k to 142 k pacer.... .Bumrah. Atleast one such pacer can be in the team.

putrevus Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Dravid is right in one thing these were the best fast. bowlers by a mile in india who went on this tour, none of them performed well. It is very unfair on this this team that these guys played so many back to back overseas tours, if this same Aussie team which was hammered by Pakistan kept on touring asian countries for next 18 months their cupboard will also look empty. If Dravid is honest he will know india never had bowlers to take 20 wickets overseas consistently. Ganguly was saying kumble was needed to guide these guys, sorry but kumble what will he do, he himself struggled mightily away home The change should come from bowlers ,spin bowlers should not be passengers when traveling rather than getting all their stats on wickets where all they need to do is toss up and pitches do the rest for them and pacers should do more than picking up odd wicket here and there or seeing the shine off new ball when playing at home. These fast bowlers when playing at home should learn how to run thru batting line ups.These guys have no idea on how to take more than odd wicket here and there and are bailed out repeatedly by batsmen and spinners at home but not overseas so they are brutally exposed. Unless india finds a bowlers of Steyn's caliber somewhere and they are not overworked by moronic captains and pitches all of sudden become bouncy and pacy this will be ongoing problem like it has been for past 50 years. We drop guy like Pujara after failing in few tests but keep on selecting Ishant sharma who everyone knows in his life will never become great so what kind of message is that sending to bowlers. Aussies dropped guy like Siddle because he lost pace that sends important message to bowlers they have to do better or they will be kicked out.

He's not sensationalist, does'nt pick favourites and consistent in his analysis win or loose. Lets not forget how bad rest of the Indian commentary line up is!! U need to read better, he was speaking of India's strengths at home and the spinners have done really well.
