how many people from Armed forces have received Bharat Ratna?
None. There are separate Wartime/Peacetime gallantry awards for Soldiers so I don't think soldiers are given Padma Awards.

These are the real heroes not the sportspersons/actors etc.
I can understand where you are coming from but sportspersons and actors can also contribute in their own way. Don't you think a generation of people got inspired seeing Kapil paa lifting WC as a proud Indian? In the same vein, some patriotic movies with leading actors/actresses inspired the nation. Ask elders of the impact of the song below :- BJKhLa_EnRg Let us all contribute in whatever way we can towards our great nation. Let us not try to put down someone to elevate someone.

Param Veer Chakra is way way greater than Bharat Ratna IMO

I'm not trying to belittle sportspersons/actors etc. Just saying that soldiers deserve far more credit than they get. People find actors/sportspersons inspirational but they should also be inspired by these brave people who keep the country safe.

+1. I believe same. That's why I never take achievements by sportspersons/film starts too seriously. In sports/Movies you will rewarded very well, also sacrifices are not same like people in Military.

Agree but how? News and articles are transient...unfortunately this NDTV videos and news will also be buried soon....We need something more lasting like a movie on their life maybe? I think the movie Border is an adaptation of real battle of Longewala where the protagonist is played by Sunny Deol. We need stuff like that to make people appreciate sacrifices of our dear armed forces.

But the most contribution actors can provide is starring in a film which would inspire others to join the army. Well, shouldn't the people who are already in the army be valued much more than that? To add to that, I doubt any more than a handful of people get inspired so much that they will join the army by a fictional and dramatized film.

For starters the media (both print and TV) should cover them more - and not just when there's a skirmish at the border. Its only when people learn about their lives and read about them often enough that they will start considering soldiers as heroes. And it will also go a long way into ensuring that more youngsters take up Armed forces as a career.

:hatsoff: Amazing! I remember I wanted to join army when I was kid.. but now that I have moved out the country and living a good safe life in Canada, I wonder what was my thought process.. Now, I can't even think of joining any army.. I can't comprehend the thought of dying for a country and leaving my family behind... How can someone give up their life for their country... Though I only have respect, love and have the highest regard for Indian army...
No, brother. That's not the way it should be. When the country demands everyone should be ready to go to border and fight. Even if you live in Canada or in USA you can find lot of people joining army and being extremely proud about it. Because it's their country and they love their country to death. If you settle down in USA, encourage your future generations to join the army if you feel you really belong there. I'm sorry if I sounded a bit rude. Just my two cents.

I don't know where to start. Let us understand one thing first. Media needs money to survive too. To cover something, it needs to make economic sense ( I know it is bad thing to say about soldiers but we live in reality). How can it make economic sense? When mainstream cinema joins in....When you have an AK, Ranbir or Sunny ( whoever ) plays a role, it serves all purposes. Media gets their money, people read/watch it..message can be conveyed, martrys can be acknowledged, etc. I am not sure how many of ICFers are aware but there is no Goddess called Santoshi maa in hinduism. It was a movie in 70s and now there are books, rituals, vrats for Santoshi maa. Media is powerful, especially in India and we need to use it to our advantage. This is my last post on this thread as I believe I am guilty of digressing on the thread about a martyr's spouse :isalute:

Agreed on that one. Lets stop discussing before the thread becomes completely derailed.

Made me cry. Our soldiers sacrifice their lives so that we may sleep peacefully in our homes. Indian Army is the holiest institution of the nation.

Solution for what? Promoting military participation? I don't know of what feasible solutions are available for it, but I know making films with the excuse of inducing patriotism is not one of them. Anyway, back to the main topic, I saw this on television and was quite shocked at her strong personality.

And Thx Indu, for reminding us all what true love actually looks like. I just realized how effed up my brain has become, watching all the fake sh!t on tv and media.

Sriram, After you got married, you dont post on ICF much? :((

soldiers get either wartime medals (Param vir chakra/Maha Vir Chakra/Vir Chakra) or peacetime medals (Ashoka Chakra/shaurya chakra/kirti chakra) param vir chakra/ashoka chakra basically are equivalent to bharat ratna
