sensible-indian Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 All those teams have decent pacers. We don't. 1 spinner is NO GO. We need 2 spinners.
Aniruddha Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 not true with Pak, Afridi and Hafeez are close to 'Genuine' at least against non-Asian countries.
bowl_out Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 england have anderson and finn ozz have starc and mitch south africa have steyn and morkel pak have irfan and junaid we have binny and bhuvi clearly pace bowling isn't our strength. we should play two spinners. Period

Mindreader Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 India shoulnt have picked 3 spinners due to favoratism of dhoni, that spot should have gone to uthappa/vijay
rkt.india Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 2 spinners is a joke in Australia apart from possibly Adelaide or may be Sydney at best. You dont need 2 spinners anywhere else. Our spinners are useless anyway in these conditions which we saw last year in NZ and now in Aus. If we have to win, we need to gamble on pacers. That is the only way to compete there. If we want to do well, we need to give confidence to our pacers. Need to be more demanding towards them. Must ask them to take more responsibility and bowl well. We wont win with spinners anyway. Why not live with the sword and die by the sword. Excluding Aaron from the squad was a joke selection too along with 3 spinners for the WC. I will play 3 specialist seamers, plus Binny at 7 and Axar/Jaddu whoever is bowling well, most probably Axar who has been better than Jaddu in recent times.

BlueBee Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Mohit Shami Binny Yadav (In NZ) Axar Will be my attack.
ThePhenomenal1 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 1 spinner is fine. jadeja and ashwin have been poor, axar has got wickets at good economy, so play him.
Magneto Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Why is the spinner so 'lonely'? :(( BCCI didn't allow girlfriend and even Dhoni got busy?
rkt.india Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 It doesn't matter. You play your best bowlers where possible. I'd rather have Ashwin or Jadeja bowl 10 overs for 50 runs and 1 wickets then Yadav come in and bowl 8 overs of brisk pace for 55 runs and the odd wicket. In How much Jadeja and Ashwin conceded in their last games? Ashwin got a lucky wicket down leg side conceding over 6 rpo. Jadeja didnt even get that and that 10 over spell for 65 runs cost us the game and that too from a position of 66/5. We are going to lose anyway then why not play bowlers who are suited to conditions more and might win you games on a good day. Ashwin/jadeja's good day will be 55/1, bad day 60-70/0. OUr best spinner is Axar who at least does concede runs if not pick wickets. Other two will neither pick wickets nor contain runs.

Our spinners are far more economical. Here's how our bowlers fared in NZ. Ashwin was the most economical followed by Jaddu. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;opposition=5;orderby=economy_rate;spanmin2=01+Jan+2013;spanval2=span;team=6;template=results;type=bowling Again in SA, barring Ishant, Jaddu and Ashwin among the top 2 economical bowlers. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;opposition=3;orderby=economy_rate;spanmin1=01+Jan+2013;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=bowling We need 2 spinners. We just have to be smart enough NOT to play them fully in the middle overs and rotate them along with a pacer at the other end. We don't have quality pacers who can be tight as well take wickets. We need spinners to choke one end up and let pacers attack from the other end. Guys like Shami will naturally prefer to have a go with the old ball. Axar as one spinner is confirmed. The other spot is between Ashwin and Jaddu.

If you dont pick wickets regularly no matter who the bowler is will be thrashed in end overs. Ashwin averaged 219 in that series. Their economical bowling is not going to win us matches any way, so, why not take a gamble.

Hence we need spinners. We can't go for the jugular and lose winnable matches. We have to take a realistic approach. Our pacers didn't take wickets in Joberg green track and conceded 350 and we blame our spinners (who are no great spinners themselves).

Garbage or not, if pacers do well only then we are going to do anything substantial. You might play 5 spinners, wont make any difference. You need to gamble and give confidence to pacers and more responsibility. Our team's problem is they dont demand more from them and are happy with whatever crap they are dishing and keep making excuses. We need more intensity and effort from them and team management need to work on that with them. We made the same mistake of playing 2 spinners in NZ and at Perth too and that decision cost us the game there. Can play 2 spinners in Adelaide.

Just because we need to demand MORE from our pacers doesn't mean we have to thrust everything at them. Ideally 4 pacers are needed. But ours are not good. So we go with 3 pacers. Demand great performance from them. If we start seeing something positive, we can add another pacer. Going for all or nothing strategy will make us lose 99 out of 100 times cos our pacers are THAT bad. We saw their aukaat in the Aus test series where they couldn't even maintain line and length. Aussie pacers atleast maintained that on flat tracks. We have to take a phased approach.
maniac Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 We have 3 spinners, that is one spinner too many to have in the squad in these conditions All of them are nothing more than bits and pieces players...None you can call an out and out specialist....Yes applies to even Ashwin who is our premier test spinner. All of them are Finger spinners, when common sense dictates that Aussie conditions require a wrist spinner...having said that apart from Afridi, all other mentioned in the OP are finger spinners, may be we can give the selectors the benefit of doubt on that one.
Marut Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 For ODIs, we need to go with two spinners because our pace attack looks docile compared to other teams. If we include pacers just for the sake of it, they will bleed runs and our pacers do not compensate with wickets either. Our spinners are usually more economical than the third pacer in the team. If our top two pacers are so bad, the third pacer and fourth pacers are going to be worse. We can afford to go with two spinners because all our spinners can contribute with the bat as well. Our fourth pacer will neither take wickets nor check the flow of runs nor buy any runs with the bat.
