If no lunch was taken and India score those 15 runs fast and then rain comes, people will say TECHNICALLY we were supposed to take break and if rain came and a tie happened, so be it. Rules and protocols are there for a reason. Sometimes (like in today's case) it may not make sense. But they are there to ensure fairness (technically speaking) for all teams. When rules are clear, any team can calculate how many overs can be roughly bowled before lunch and try to knock those runs within those overs if needed.

When you let arbitrary decisions to take place, it may look logical in one situation (like this) but may be contentious in others. So its better to have set rules and then periodically review it and make changes in order to remove glitches like these. Like if a team is within certain runs for victory/wickets for victory, lunch can be stretched for certain overs.

A lot of folks mistake fairness with desirable outcomes. There are times when both these do contradict and therefore, you go with the former rather than the latter.
