sensible-indian Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 How come Virat Kohli is not there? He is the best batsman in ODI's I have ever seen. Less sample set. Has to perform in WCs and do lots more. I too feel Virat will retire as the greatest ODI batsman ever (if things go well).

Its like SRT in mid 90s. Everyone knew he was going to be ATG but if he retired that time, they wouldn't call him that. Need a much bigger sample set. Virat is yet to perform in WCs (like ATGs). He has his chance and is doing well. Let's see.
Precambrian Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Phew, just refreshed myself on Sir Viv. Drool worthy numbers and the manner he got them! Only gripe would be he never faced his own bowlers and hence was not really 'tested'. He retired by the time Pakistan and SA and Aus came to the party.

Would he have been able to cope up with endless bouts in SHARJAH deserts and averaging nearly 40 ODIs a single year?

"All Time" so he is expected to do well in any "what if" scenario (including batting with a baseball bat) that you throw in

If you are talking about fitness then Viv was exceptional for his era..he I believe would have relished ODIs more than test considering most of pitches in Sharjah were flat as a highway and field setting unlike longer format. Other thing to remember he did face ATG fast bowlers of his era with aplomb including famous spin quartet of India.

goose Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Reading some of the comments on Viv and batting conditions one might be forgiven for thinking Tendulkar's best years came yesterday. Tendulkar was at his best 17-20 years ago. The ignorance of his career never ceases to astound me.
Guldozer Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I think in ODIs Viv > Tendulkar . IIRC he has a better average and a better strike rate, about 20 years before Tendulkar (even though their careers overlapped a bit).
