zen Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 First of all, congrats to the defending champions for making it to the next stage w/o much trouble, an achievement in itself because of the way the team played prior to the tournament. Moving forward, let's analyze Ind performance so far, the key opponents, and the issues that need to be ironed out for the team to succeed in the KOs. The key opponents Pool A 1. NZ - Look well balanced. Apart from the game against OZ, they haven't been tested so far. Hard to say if they are yet to peak or due for a bad game 2. OZ - Have had a few tough games so are getting battle hardened. Batting is shaping up well. Bowling on flat surfaces is a possible worry 3. SL - Have gone about their business as usual by inflicting damage to the minnows. However, have fought well vs. stronger teams as well. The team appears to be peaking, however the question is that can it sustain the form. Key players such as Sanga have already hit 3 hundreds. Does he have more gas in the tank? Pool B 1. SA - Played like two different teams. Hopefully, the bad games are out of the way and it can finally put its act together in the KOs. Amla, ABDV, and Tahir have played well so far. However, much like SL, it has to been seen how much gas the key players have left in the fuel tank 2. Pak - After some bad days, the team is enjoying some good days. For how long can they keep the bad days away? Other teams Eng / BD / WI / Ire - have already had or are yet to have their moments in the competition. Some of them could turn dangerous, while some will fade away Team India Much like NZ, have not been tested much. It is hard to say if the peak is yet to come or if it is due for a bad game. If it is the later, I hope, it is against Ireland Strengths - Surprisingly, it has been the bowling - whether bowling first or second Weaknesses - Lacks batting depth. #7 spot is a concern. Current incumbent hasn't been able to truly impress either with the bat or ball. Considering the reserves in the squad, there is not much that the team can do. There is no option for a left arm seamer or a leg spinner. But as I said there is nothing much the team can do about it now. Possible KOs path Mar 19th: QF - At MCG vs. Eng (or BD). SL have a theoretical chance of finishing 4th as well and thus Ind would have to play at SCG, however since SL would be playing the Scots, it is expected to not only win but also improve its NRR Mar 26th: SF - At SCG vs. Aus (most likely) Mar 29th: Final - At MCG vs. NZ (most likely) Eng --> Aus --> NZ, these are the teams that Ind could have trouble with in these conditions So what should the team be for the KOs: TBF, To win - Ind will probably need a couple of batsmen in each game to get big scores w/ others playing around them as the team is less likely to recover to post a challenging total from a 100 for 4 situation. Because the team lacks the batting depth, it would need to focus on competing extraordinarily as a bowling and fielding unit. And luckily, these two departments are shaping up well :nice: Moving forward, Ind should stop worrying about trying to do something about its batting depth. Unless someone magically hits match winning form, focus on the key batsmen getting big scores. Batsmen who can come in and get a 30 or 40 will not necessarily cut in. It will need to play batsmen who go on to get a big 100 after reaching 30. Any weak link in bowling will have to be ironed out because the bowling has to focus on defending or restricting the opponent to around 280, which is a good total in high pressure games With limited options, below is my 11 for the KOs: Top 6 - Rohit - Dhawan - Kohli - Rahane - Raina - Dhoni #7 - the pivot position - Ashwin (Rather than thinking about this as a hitting only position - Someone like Ashwin can be promoted to #7 to hold the fort, rotate strike, and let the set batsman do the work. If someone in the lower order gets in to a decent hitting form, then he can be promoted to this position too) #8 to #11, the best bowlers - Bhuvi / Jadeja (15 - 20 runs are not helping Ind unless scored in the last 3-4 overs) / Binny / Axar (Ind would need play the best bowler here based on the playing conditions) - Shami - Mohit - Yadav :icflove:

Your post seems to be heavily influenced by the recent match against WI... Think of a situation where Nohit and Rahane knocked it around slowly thinking they will accelerate in the end overs (this has been India's strategy more often than not)... and get out in the 40th over... If Dhoni and Ashwin are in the middle at 200/5, with Bhuvi to come in next, really doubt if we can get more than 250 or so.. That is why Dhoni relies so much on Jaddu... Late hitting... But he plays like a maniac at times, and throws his wicket away even while chasing 50 off 15 overs... So, have Jaddu (or Binny) in the team... Play them at 7 or 8 based on the situation... If you need late over slogging, play them at 7... If you need sensible knocking around for singles, play Ashwin at 7, and one of these two at 8

He is not a hitter, at least not on Australian pitches. He is more like a tailender these days. And he is not good enough to be selected on the basis of his bowling only. He needs to be replaced by either Axar or Binny. Axar is definitely a better bowler than jadeja and can slog a few. Binny can hit some lusty blows too..

However, the decision should be taken based on the bowling form of these players And ofc Ind still has to win one of its remaining two games to comfortable claim the #1 spot and avoid any complicated NRR calculations .... If Ireland beats both Ind and Pak, it has chances of topping the group too :P

Pakistan got knocked around and then now they have got their XI sorted out with bad apples getting dropped.
