The football WC last year had 64 matches in 32 days - and there I guess there were far fewer really boring matches like cricket WC still they concluded the tournament in around one month. ICC has to have 2 matches every single day (in group stages) from the next edition.

They can do 2 ODIs in day - start one at 9 am and the other at 2.30 pm. T20 is obviously better suited for 2 matches a day but in ODIs also they have to have 2 matches in the WC - there were just too many boring matches in a row. Also, at least for me, this WC has been boring in general bcoz of the high number of one sided matches where one team more more than 300 and won comfortably. They have to have some sort of balance between bat and ball - low scoring matches (I would say that less than 300 batting first is probably a 'low' score for this WC) have been mostly exciting. Just seeing bowlers being hit out of the park for 3.5 hours can only take cricket so far....not at all a sustainable strategy.

That is already under discussion but was not implemented due to monetary reasons.
RedFever Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 On one hand posters here supporting the associates teams to be a part of the next worldcup and also do not want boring one sided matches. I dont think that is going to ever happen with 4 associates + ZIM and Bangladesh.

My interest was very different last time as it had been more than 2 decades before India won the WC but this year even though I'm following it and want India to win but it's not the same feeling. Also I don't like this sharing of WC venues. Nz can host WC on its on and same with India. I don't like this idea of 2-3 countries being co-hosts. It takes the flavor out of it. For smaller nations, maybe Sri Lanka and Bangladesh can host jointly but Pakistan, India, Australia or NZ don't need to.

This is about supporting the home team in a crucial match who have a good chance of winning the world cup. It can be scheduled next year and i would still expect people to turn up and it to be the main topic of discussion in Australia's newspapers back pages. As i said before i dont hold it against anybody that Sa v SL had a poor crowd. A neutral match. Keep in mind the Rugby world cup (which is closest to a global organised sport after cricket and football) also lasted 44 days with 48 matches. So its not as if cricket if the only sport around which does that. The truth is cricket is heavily leveraged on the Indian market. The ICC need to make sure the Indian group games (of which there have to be X amount) are there at times when the majority are able to view them. Hence India are playing d/n matches close to the weekends. Football does not have those finances. If the Australian cricket board did not want the WC in March they should have ditched the tri series and started the tournament earlier.

Right now there was too big a gap between interesting matches in the group stages which could lead to people losing interest in the tournament itself.

I follow the premier league football in the UK so that means i cant follow the cricket world cup? Dont give me the scheduling excuse either. You have NZ who are filling out stadia. Even they have super league rugby. I read 40,000 attended the Wellington stadium? (need confirmation on this) Th world cup in Qatar is in December. for 2022. You will not watch it cause its in the middle of cricket season? I can understand if Australia crashed out and this was two neutral teams. But not when the home team is playing. This event happens every 4 years. Australians will go to the SF and Final but the matches before then are silly anyway. We know we will get to the semi. It is almost March ffs. You recon Australians are thrilled they are missing a month of football? Think about it for a second. Couldn't care less about the soccer wc
Scarves Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Not FTA other than Australian matches which were moved on secondary channels anyway to accommodate the Rugby League. Channel 9's lack of involvement since the rights were given to Star Sports who are easily more focused on India rather than trying to build the market here. A lot of cricket was played this summer, so there is a burnout there. The Rugby WC will be shown FTA ditto other WC. There isn't an overkill on those sports on our television.

youngindia Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Cricket is big during the summer,number two in the states of Australia. aussies have long told me (during test series in india during feb-march) that once footy season starts, attention goes away from cricket ...so that's not surprising Though I am reading only web editions of smh,daily telegraph etc the coverage is certainly less than the summer test series but still reasonable. during 1992, channel 9 followed the same policy of broadcasting Australia only matches and got some stick from cricket fans.

Its not about Aussie sporting preference .Its about surprise that a country who is known to produce best cricket team .Where people fill grounds when tests are played are giving so little importance to world cup .Kerala in India don't produce best ranji team neither they are known to produce great players for India Even when USA reached soccer quarter final Americans were celebrating on streets, and one news channel even said that most of americans don't even know what football is .I ams sure if world cup is played in America and america reaches quarter final , lot of americans will come and support their team irrespective of whether they like cricket or not The surprise element is world cup is played in Australia 2nd time in 40 years and this is first time their team reached SF and their team is doing exceptionally well .atleast you expect more respect for this from a cricketing nation
