Modi Seeks to Improve Relations With Pakistan Via Cricket

Cricket diplomacy has been tried in the past and failed.
Thats because cricket is not a means to diplomacy. Also, people - both Indians and Pakistanis, just do not care about cricket as much as they used to earlier so playing/not playing cricket will hardly improve relations.

If the cricket series with PAK does go ahead' date=' they are going to loose a lot of votes IMO.[/quote'] Anyone for whom playing/not playing cricket matches with Pakistan is a consideration while voting, deserves only Congress.

We have diplomatic ties with them, their singers and comedians work in chewtiya-wood, their other sporting teams play intl. tournaments in India. My suggestion would be to use this series as leverage and ask them to hand over the likes of Lakhvi, Hafiz Saeed and Dawood. Why not? If they refuse, play a double game and say that we won't play until you stop financing terror in India. Devious, yes, but that is politics. We hold all the aces here. See, even though we allowed their hockey and kabbadi team to play in India, those were in international tournaments, not bi-laterals. It's a nothing to lose situation. Might as well act like the evil Baniyas our Padosis deem us to be.

I think its not fair to compare pre and post Modi clearly the Modi administration is different from the BJP which opposed this. Now if Modi during his campaign as Gujarat CM or even during the election campaign post September 2013 then fair enough he did a u turn. For the record i dont agree in this stance. But clearly as leaders at the top change the stance of the party will change. If you look at Yechury he has changed some key stances from Karat. A party or an entity is a fluid thing. I am sure post Modi the new BJP leader will have some different ideas. Thats not a u turn.

It really, really shouldn't matter. This is an opportunity to passively arm-twist Pakistan to serve national interests. For once let's be a bit *****ish and milk the situation. Doesn't matter if it is a u-turn or c-turn. What's the worse that can happen? We will continue to not play them? We have tried being graceful with them in the past, what did we gain? Diddly squat.

I dont know, it sets a precedent. I am not a hardliner against it. But pakistan will periodically keep attacking key targets in India. Before Mumbai you had the parliamentary attacks in 2004. 1947/1948 first war 1965 second wat 1971 third war If you look at major events, 90s early its was militancy in the valley then it was cooling down and then 1999 kargil 2004 the parliamentary attack 2008 mumbai ????? ?????? its been periodic. While cricket may not the the significant factor in how people vote. The actions of allying with the PDP in JnK etc along with all this paint a picture which is not good for core BJP supporters. They might just not turnout for the polls.

Ask them to hand over terrorists and then we can play cricket all day everyday. If they say no, what will be their alibi? "Our hockey and kabbadi team played in India recently" "Yes, in international tournaments for which they fairly qualified. We can't deny them that opportunity. The series in question is a bi-lateral. Unless you have a deal sweetener, we are not interested." Why not be chalu for once?

I don't think cricket has that kind of pull anymore. Or rather, the India-Pak rivalry in cricket is not so intense anymore (apart from really big occasions like WC) so I don't think most people will have any problem with it..... In fact I expect them to watch it without any issues when it happens.

Won't work - in fact Indian leaders and foreign policy advisors will look incredibly naive if they even try it. Cricket maybe loved by people in both countries but it most certainly is no longer powerful enough (if it ever was so powerful at any time) to act as a bargaining tool for something like releasing terrorists.

Then don't bother playing them. Nothing to lose for us. Keep the diplomacy to a bare minimum. By releasing Lakhvi recently, Pakistan have not helped themselves.

I think this is a bad move but it is also very funny to see them begging for the mercy of a so called mass murder

"We have taken the decision to start a cricket series between both countries to improve our relations," said Modi
What Bullshit from our PM. If you want to improve relations, do it at political level. If you want to cut all ties, that too should be done at political level. I don't mind either scenario. But, whatever happens in Cricket field has zero significance in India-Pak relations. So both countries should cut this pointless dialogue-baazi.
