I just searched what I posted to make sure and couldn't find anything... His judgement, patience,shot selection is what encapsulates a classical test innings. It wouldn't have been very sensible of Root to simply defend aimlessly like the batsmen before him and let the NZ bowlers simply bowl at him. A flurry of off/cover drives from both him and Stokes changed the complexion of the inning.

I think that McCullum slogged randomly at lords but only attacked loose deliveries in this test. Even the ball he got out to in the first inning was a big half volley, just a badly executed shot.
