Gollum Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 - 40 years since it became India's 22nd state. - Its impressive record in literacy, poverty alleviation, sanitation and organic farming makes it nearly unparalleled not just in the region but in, perhaps, all of Asia. - With a population of just 6,10,000 Sikkim, the least populated state in India, has its per capita GDP growing in double digits since 2004-05 : similar-sized northeastern states barely registering 5% growth. - Sikkim slashed its poverty ratio by 22% to 51,000 (8.2%) in 2011-12 from 1.7 lakh (30.9%) in 2004-05. In 1994, it stood at 41%. The reduction catapulted Sikkim into the nation's top five states in battling poverty. Only Goa (5.1%), Kerala (7.1%) and Himachal (8.1%) fared better. - Sikkim's literacy rate shot to 82.2% from 68.8% in 2001, among the country's highest. Male literacy 86.6%, female literacy 66.4%. Its rural literacy rate of 79.8% surpassed the national rate of 68.9%. The state aims to make Sikkim India's second 100% literate state. - Sikkim's evolution into a fully organic state since embracing the mission in 2003 received a fillip from PM Narendra Modi earlier this year. Speaking at a reception by Indian expats in Germany, Modi waxed eloquent on huge advances made by Sikkim in organic farming. Of the state's 60,000 ha farmland, 40% is organic. - The UN hailed Sikkim for its Human Development Report indices as a global best-practice in February 2014. Terming its achievements as 'incredible', UN's India representative Lise Grande said there was no other government under similar conditions that had achieved such success, acknowledging the tiny state's 15% growth in less than a decade as among the highest for all Indian states and one of Asia's highest. - Sikkim was also declared to be the first state to achieve 100% sanitation coverage becoming completely free of public defecation on December 8, 2008, in a country where large parts of the population still defecate in the open. :hatsoff: Having been to Sikkim a couple of times must say that the locals there are probably the warmest hosts in our country, love the people there. A model Indian state for other states to aspire to- the administration(probably the best CM of our country), social awareness, public hygiene, communal harmony,law fearing citizens,patriotism(unlike the north eastern states)........ tick all boxes. Been to Gangtok and Kalimpong and Tsangu lake , took a white water river rafting ride on Teesta river - :two_thumbs_up:better even than Kashmir TBH and I have been to Kashmir twice too... For people that may not know, Tsangu Lake is frozen fully ( surface) at times during the year and you can see reflection of the peaks when you look at the surface... From Kalimpong you can see many Himalayan peaks...and the hotels built completely with wood remind me of some Scotland hotels I stayed in.... Will go to Sikkim again next year

Been to Gangtok and Kalimpong and Tsangu lake , took a white water river rafting ride on Teesta river - :two_thumbs_up:better even than Kashmir TBH and I have been to Kashmir twice too... For people that may not know, Tsangu Lake is frozen fully ( surface) at times during the year and you can see reflection of the peaks when you look at the surface... NareshK Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Nepal should also have been under our control. Would have improved much better than its present state. If I'm not wrong, the kings and monarchs who rule Nepal have kept it backward. Its per capita and standard of living is one of the lowest in South Asia.
amiret Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Most NE states are doing better than the rest of India in access to improved sanitation facilities. Kerala is also similar. Far ahead of the industrialized states. And Kerala continues to top the State HDI chart in India.
f.b.m Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Pretty much felt like a different country to me. Not crowded at all, no littering and generally a more chilled out place. The lack of flat land does get a bit annoying after while though.
zen Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Many of the old Dev Anand films were shot in places such as Sikkim. Every time, I watched Jewel Thief, I felt like visiting Sikkim. If I am not wrong, Danny Denzongpa is from Sikkim as well.
sandeep Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 NE states also benefit from having a lower population density, compared to the over-populated plains, which results in macro numbers progress taking a bit longer. The one thing that India could and should do better is sanitation and cleanliness - the ingrained tolerance of filth will take a generation to go away, but needs to be taken on on a war footing... India has so much history and so many beautiful places, tourism could generate a lot of money if not for the filth and lack of facilities.

Its mostly mountains and there's isn't a lot of flat land in the whole state.
sandeep Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Scarcity of flat land is arguably the main reason why population is low. All I am saying is that when there are fewer people in a state, state level statistics can improve quicker compared to more populated states...
Doof Warrior Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Its easier to improve smaller states than the bigger ones. Tamilnadu and Pondicheery are more or less similar culturally and people are also same. But later is one of the better states in India ( though TN is better than other bigger states of similar size )
