BeautifulGame Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 India's decision to play five bowlers in the subcontinent has generated a lot of buzz, and now more importantly, some tangible results. Enough for*Virat Kohli*to maintain his faith in it. Although the only Test in Fatullah ended in a draw, the additional help had proved useful as R Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh combined to take eight wickets to force Bangladesh to follow-on. But with rain usurping a giant chunk of the game, the expected end came to pass. But not before Kohli was able to work out a few more permutations to his strategy. "I would want someone like R Ashwin, who is averaging 40 with the bat in Test matches - you really can't ask for more from an allrounder - and someone like Harbhajan Singh to step up with the bat, and [Wriddhiman] Saha too," Kohli said. "If those three start clicking, you literally have eight batsmen, and you can't really ask for more as a captain. It's basically up to the first six to take more responsibility and we are confident of doing that." http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/887745.html Seems Kohli wants to play 5 bowlers for the tour to Srilanka and home series against SA . Excellent decision. Hopefully Saha and Ashwin steps up to it . Only problem is continuing with Bhajji. He just isn't good enough and playing two off spinners against the likes of SA or Srl is absurd . Also we would be better off playing 3 spinners and 2 seamer combo
Old guy Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I am honestly impressed as I thought he will continue in same old ways with just more intent for winning .. You just have to play 5 bowlers to get result now a days specially away from home as spinners won't bowl much and even at home this means there will more intensity ..
div Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 The problem is that none of these fast bowlers can bat and he doesn't want trundlers like BK.
Old guy Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 The problem is that none of these fast bowlers can bat and he doesn't want trundlers like BK. But ashwin can and ishant can hang around .. And I honestly will prefer one bhuvi like bowler anyway who provides control .. Bhuvi when he is at his best not what we saw in Australia ...
MK55 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Dont mind Bhajji in the side. Kohli has confidence in his batting :haha: This means he will always go for a 5 bowler attack with probably 3 pacers. We'll get reverse swing in India and both Umesh and Aaron will be more effective. Would come down to Jadeja vs Bhajji as Kohli would want someone who can bat. Obviously Kohli prefers Bhajji over Jadeja ATM

Bhuvi when he is at his best not what we saw in Australia ... Bhuvi is useful in English conditions,I don't think Kohli will play him in Sri Lanka. As far as batting is concerned, team need another bowling all-rounder like Ashwin,Ishant's batting is not enough.I think u are underestimating opposition teams.
Shivaji bhonsle Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 One thing I disliked was his leg slip field setting for Umesh yadav and asking him to bowl leg side line. Kohli shouldn't pick this up from Dhoni. Its a very -ve way to look for a wicket...
sensible-indian Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Great attitude. But if we are going to pick 3 pacers with Ashwin and Bhajji as a 5 man attack in Asia, you are indirectly putting pressure on Ashwin to take all the wickets in most of the innings as pacers won't reverse it every innings. I am genuinely happy for Bhajji's 3 wickets in the last test but we need to ask him to retire. No SL or SA batsmen is going to charge down the wicket and gift a few. We need 3 spinners with 2 pacers. Ashwin, Jaddu/anyone else, Mishra - should be our spin attack in Asia.
Old guy Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Bhuvi is useful in English conditions' date='I don't think Kohli will play him in Sri Lanka. As far as batting is concerned, team need another bowling all-rounder like Ashwin,Ishant's batting is not enough.I think u are underestimating opposition teams.[/quote'] IMO that is luxury and if you have that option then you should take advantage of all rounders but if not its important to have team to take 20 wickets as an extra bowler adds so much more than guy coming in at 6 and then wicketkeeper . No team in world only plays with 4 bowlers its just impossible for quick bowlers to bowl 25 overs per day at same intensity and even spinners can use shorter spells .. No one is arguing having all rounders won't be better but if you don't have all rounders then next best thing IMO is play 5 bowlers who will win games . Totally agree and it same problem in Australia and something he needs to improve very quickly .. Remember that awful strategy for Warner ?
G_B_ Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 this is what worries me. dont be rigid... play as per the pitch and opposition
Gollum Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 this is what worries me. dont be rigid... play as per the pitch and opposition +1 Imagine playing 2 of spinners against RSA who have 10 RHBs. :giggle: Bhajji isn't the same bowler he was 10 years back, why is it so difficult for our management to understand that? Plus if we play Maggi in our team we are effectively playing with 4 batsmen, Saha and Ashwin while the remaining 5 are noobs with the bat. Something looks really bad here, I foresee RSA bowling us out under 100 a few times in winter in such a situation. 6-5 was fine with Pujara and Dhoni, not with Nohit and Saha !!!
Doof Warrior Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 This will work well in asian pitches. If we go out to play in NZ or Eng , if we are 4 down for 150 , we may end up all out for 180.

What we need to do is 1. Ask Nohit to go and dive in the ocean and never come back for Tests 2. Bring Pujara in for him 3. We need a control bowler and a steady batsmen in Bhuvi 3. For spin tracks - Play 3 spinners with 2 pacers For tracks that may support pacers - Play 3 pacers with 2 spinners (very rarely though)

Bigg Brother Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 5 is good. But that should be 3 spinners+2 seamers. Ishant should not be played.
Debutant Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 5 is good. But that should be 3 spinners+2 seamers. Ishant should not be played. Truth is we need a workhorse who can bowl long spells and be fit most of the times. Unfortunately Ishant fits this role. Umesh and Aaron both will bowl in short bursts and are pretty inconsistent too. Like it or not, Ishant will play, that is the sorry state of our bowling attack.
tweaker Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 For 6-5 combination the wicketkeeper should be good batsman who can contribute with the bat.I would prefer Naman Ojha instead of Saha for this role.I can imagine Ojha scoring 100 in batting at no 6 but Saha batting does not show any confidence.
vayuu1 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I don't mind 6-5 combination, but we need a good wicketkeeper batsman, saha the keeper is good, but saha the batsmen, looks very ordinary.
