Tiger80
Federer almost at 34 playing very best tennis Still people think that he is not all time great better than Sampras or Nadal?
sourab10forever
Expect many Indians to buy that BS. Yesterday a few so called Indian sports journalists & fans on social media were comparing him to Federer, Edberg, Becker, Djokovic etc calling Paes as the best of the lot due to his longevity. :hysterical::hysterical: Probably around 10k players(all time) better than him in singles and our country starved of sporting heroes has made a hero out of this mediocre athlete. Honestly we should be celebrating Ramanathan Krishnan and Vijay Amritraj in stead of these doubles specialists. :headshake: We Indians are really obsessed with underestimating ourselves.. Peas is a great player in doubles and one of the best Asia has produced.agree that u can't compare him with ATGs like RF,nadal, djoko etc but he's right up there just below them. U don't win So many GS's just like that. And give him credit for playing so long."winning seems to grow with age" as he said.
bones
Oh what a wonderful day. Oh what a wonderful, truly glorious weekend. If not for Stan it could have been so much better. Djokovic is without any question now amongst the greats of all time. 2 more with a French and he'll surpass Borg.

Raghav_12
Paes and Hingis won the mixed doubles title. Very good Wimbledon for Indians. Sumit Nagal also won boys' doubles. That is 3 titles in one championship. Earlier they would turn to doubles after failing on singles. Now they have started picking doubles from the start itself. :((

Singles is the real deal and Paes was a failure in singles. Ramanathan Krishnan and Amritraj were awesome in singles and even if Paes wins 30 more doubles majors he is nothing before them. zep1706
Doubles may lack glamour but it is not as easy as some people are making it sound like. It requires skill and precision. Paes is an incredibly talented player. He is definitely one of the best volleyers in the world and to keep winning for so many years is amazing. sourab10forever
But VVS is considered greater and tests are still a superior form of cricket. That's the wrong concept. As a cricket fan who must not compare the two forms. Though u can personally choose to ur liking, a format does not become superior just because a individual likes if. Russles can't play a 100 ball 50 And VVS can't play a 50 ball
Gollum
Paes isn't fit to wipe the dirt of the shoes of any top 200 player. Forget about VVS-Russell comparison. It is more like comparing Bradman/Sobers/Marshall to a Maldives village cricketer. He is an Indian legend no doubt but it is like andhon me kaana raja. In my list he isn't in the top 25 greatest Indian sportspersons and he is there because of his Atlanta bronze(fluke), not the stupid doubles majors. I agree with McenRoe who recently said that doubles is nonsense and should be removed from majors. Watching Paes play in the same court as Federer or Djokovic makes me wanna :hysterical::hysterical: Find it absurd when pundits put him in the same sentence as Sachin,Anand, Dhyan Chand when discussing our greatest sporting personalities. Gollum
And I am not a Paes hater. I love that guy but I hate it when he compares himself to legends like Federer. Check out this article and judge yourself. Leander Paes: My target is Roger Federer's 17 Grand Slams http://sports.ndtv.com/tennis/news/223465-leander-paes-my-target-is-roger-federers-17-grand-slams Ridiculous to see people bluffing to portray a wrong image of themselves before the gullible public/casual tennis fans. Very similar to Pakistanis who rate Sultan Khan as a World Champ when he won't feature among the top 1000 greatest chess masters of all time. In the official Pak chess website I remember them mentioning Sultan Khan as a former World Champ alongside titans like Lasker, Capablanca,Botvinik, Fischer, Kasparov, Karpov, Anand etc. He was among the top 20 players of GBR that time(a minnow that time) which is as big an achievement as being the best Indian footballer.:hysterical: Paes fans are just like Sultan's fans, hyping their mediocre hero as if he were some ATG. Next what? Sania Mirza: My target is Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slams or Chetri:My target is Messi's 91 goals in a year

In fact these Indian doubles champions are setting wrong examples for budding players as they tempt to skip singles for easy glory in doubles. Ok take back my words about right below them or what ever since i think u really cannot and should not compare.but can u please tell me any doubles player of the 21st century (late 90ies incl),who is much much much better than peas? And if you see it in terms of winning trophies, nothing wrong in comparing him with greats of the singles arena. Don't agree with the theory of singles>>>>>>.doubles. It's just that doubles is not given so much importance that the skill and talent of the top doubles-only players skips the eye.

What's wrong in that? If he is on a course of overhauling a great record,he might as well express it . Just give you a example. If during the innings when rohit sharma hit 209, if he would have been asked if he would like to overhaul sachin's 200,he would have said that he would have loved to break such a great man's record. Does that mean that he is trying to say that he is greater that SRT?

Paes was a top 100 player when he played singles. I think his highest rank was 70, do you expect a 42 year old to be a top singles player? He was not such a poor player. Watch his match against Agassi at the US open. He was a decent player. Doubles does not require too much physical effort as you have only half the court to cover and the points involve volleying. It still needs a lot of skill. If it was so easy everyone would have won it. You can still earn a lot of money playing doubles. Many singles players outside the top 20-30 do play doubles. Leander is better than them in doubles. And I am not a Paes hater. I love that guy but I hate it when he compares himself to legends like Federer. Check out this article and judge yourself. That is obviously an incredibly stupid thing to say but him making a stupid statement does not take away his doubles achievements.
