Kohli was great but failed miserably in Eng, Pujara was a big disappointment, Rohit flopped as expected. But now comes the home season, all of em should do reasonably well but who do you think will be our best batsman? 3 tests v SL 4 tests v SA Rahane Kohli Pujara Rohit or any other? Vijay/KL Rahul/Dhawan etc.

Despite that Rohit will probably struggle against South African bowlers so Pujara and Kohli will be the most prolific scorers in these home series. Rahane did very well in difficult conditions away from home so naturally you would assume that he would do even better in supposedly easier conditions at home.

He can't play on slow pitches that is his problem. His shots doesn't seem to pack the power like the others do. He is more of a touch players. hopefully he can change that.

Ideally he should be back at 3, but with India playing 5 bowlers and Ravi and Kohli's love for Rohit. He has the spot sealed for SL series at least.

He is much more at ease on faster tracks where he can use the pace of the ball and manoeuvre his way out. His ability against swing/seam/bounce is much better than his play against spinners. As someone said he is a touch artist and him trying to generate power on his own will likely end up with catching practise for our opponent fielders. Also his batting position will ensure that he has to play a lot of spin bowling/reverse swing and that is a disadvantage. He may also run out of partners seeing that there is only one guy, Ashwin after him who can bat. But I still expect him to score a couple of big ones and end up with a season average of 45-50. And I am sure the umpires will have a lot to say as is always the case with the poor chap.:facepalm: Pujara can be ruled out because he won't get too many games. Our stupid management(and Mumbai lobby) has more faith in Rohit Sharma :whack:. Will be very surprised if he gets a single game under Kohli no matter how badly Rohit fares. Kohli-Rohit jodi is our new MSD-Jadeja which is tragic because if given chances I am sure Che will pile on runs like he did 3 years back(remember England 2012?). He is our best batsman on SC tracks. Rohit will fail catastrophically. Lanka and RSA will shred him to bits and I will be surprised if he averages in double digits this season. Trust me he is useless in the longer version. Kohli has never done anything of note in home test matches and he lacks the ability to score daddy 100s. His game against spin bowling is in general poor(like most of his contemporaries) and he is a sitting duck against any form of swing bowling. Add to the fact that he has been in poor form this year and has captaincy tension. He will be a letdown this season(compared to his usual standards) but has enough quality to average in the low 40s. By now I have given up any hope of him being the stand out batsman of this younger generation. That mantle has been emphatically taken by Smith and Root and even Williamson,Rahane, Matthews are ahead of him in the race. Now coming to the openers I feel they will be the key. I have high hopes from Dhawan especially who can blitz out 100s in these familiar tracks like Viru. Only problem is he may struggle in the two paced Lankan pitches only to find himself dropped for Rahul in the home tests. Vijay has the best shot out of all our batsmen. He is bloody patient and has mastered the art of playing old fashioned test cricket.If he comes out of the new ball spells expect him to grind our opponents to dust. He is from the Gavaskar school of batting and expect Lanka/RSA to hit a roadblock with him at the crease. Also he has scored a few 150s in Indian pitches against a strong Aussie attack, so he clearly has it in him to do well in these pitches. Moreover unlike in overseas tests, openers in India have the easiest batting conditions after seeing off the new ball. There is a reason why Viru and Gambhir were so good here. Expect Vijay to plunder runs this season. I foresee him scoring 4-5 100s including a couple of daddy 100s. Expect him to average anywhere above 70 in the upcoming matches and make a strong case for himself in the ICC awards. My final prediction: 1. Vijay 2. Rahane 3. Kohli 4. Maggi 5. Che(just because he won't get any match in spite of being our best bet in Indian pitches) Wildcard-Dhawan, he may end up at no 1 or no 6.

Rahane came into limelight because he piled on runs in Ranji playing on slow surfaces. ODI's is a different game and he may seem out of place there on sluggish tracks mainly due to not keeping the pace up, otherwise he plays some beautiful strokes. Kohli is guilty of often playing too many shots after getting to a 100 but if his progress is anything to go by, he'll be doing everything to rectify it. I expect him to score a big 100 this season. And he's a poor player of swing based on one series in Eng? It swings in NZ, Aus and SL as well and he has a terrific record in those places. He just ran into a bowler that had his number. Didn't Tendulkar also become his bunny? Was he a terrible player of swing? And yeah its tragic that we'll have to put up with Rohit at 3 for good 4-5 tests and even then only if the team does poorly will he be dropped.
