However, there was one person who didn't think much of the former President's accomplishments as a scientist. Pakistan nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan in an interview to BBC said Abdul Kalam was an ordinary scientist. A Q Khan, considered the father of Pakistan's nuclear programme said, "Kalam used to prefer simplicity in all walks of life but he was an ordinary scientist." In a phone interview to BBC, Khan said he could not remember anything noteworthy that Kalam had achieved. He claimed India's missile programme was developed with Russia's help. The Pakistani scientist also claimed that there was politics involved in the appointment of Abdul Kalam as President in 2002. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister and the NDA was in power at the time. "He (Kalam) was made the President because the BJP wanted to garner Muslim votes," Khan said. We need missiles as strength respects strength, former President Abdul Kalam would say In 2004, A Q Khan was accused of supplying crucial secrets on nuclear weapons to foreign countries. He was dismissed from his job and was put under house arrest. However, Islamabad high court in 2009 declared him a free citizen of Pakistan. For lakhs of Indians, Kalam embodied the new India story, born into a poor Muslim family in Tamil Nadu, he rose by sheer force of education to become a missile scientist, the "missile man of India" becoming chief scientific adviser to the Prime Minister, then secretary of the DRDO, and then President of India. Kalam collapsed on July 27 at 6.30pm while delivering a lecture at IIM-Shillong and was declared dead soon after.

However I would like to hear form some competent authroties on the prowess of Dr. Kalam as a scientist. High stature of Kalam as thinker, motivator, author and leader is beyond and would be among the tallest. Similarly there is hardly any doubt in terms of his commitment towards country and society. However, I don't have clarity on his exact achievements as scientist. I know DRDO and ISRO achieved lot under his leadership but those achievements may have more to do with his abilities as leader than as a scientist. Also I know he couldn't have led a team of scientists without being a good scientist himself. I would like to know what others think of him taking him as scientist only. I understand once you take a leadership role in science organizations, your own focus on research and invention will go down so it would be unreasonable to expect Dr. Kalam to come up with new inventions etc and he justified that more than enough through achievements in other fields. I apologize if my post seems to be lacking in respect, I just want to have better clarity.

But, he had much more facets of his persona which in package made him so revered across the nation. May be because the person died two days back and his last rituals have not been performed yet. Any normal person would not comment like this, I am not sure why do you think people outside internet who have social life would not react in the same way?

What is the point in honoring someone's memory when you can't even heed some of his basic words? Moreover, AQ Khan's point may or may not be valid. Some one is sad due to a near once death, some passerby does a name calling to the dead person we will react at that moment, we are humans not machine who have been programmed to work as per SOP under all situations.

So, giving an opinion is now a "certificate"? I'm not even 0.5% of what Kalam was or may not will ever will be but certainly I wasn't giving any certificate.

I m not sure about the scale or yard stick you are using, which classifies Dr. APJ Kalam's contributions as 'above average", which basically means "not bad". You are using below-average effect.
