India need to rethink jaded T20 template

Even Manish Pandey, who has an IPL century and a match-winning 94 in an IPL final, only got his chance seven years after his first-class debut, after building a solid body of work in the longest format.

The selectors have had no qualms in picking bowlers and allrounders based on their IPL performances. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Pawan Negi can all be termed IPL finds. Even Ashish Nehra, who made a comeback at 36, after nearly five years out of international cricket, kept himself in the selectors' eye only because of the IPL.

But they have been rather more conservative while selecting batsmen, even for the shortest format. Since the start of 2014, the only batsmen they have given ODI debuts to have been Kedar Jadhav - who only came into the reckoning after scoring over 1000 runs in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season - Pandey, and Gurkeerat Singh - who has a fairly ordinary IPL record, but enjoyed an excellent 50-overs season for India A, last year. The only batsmen they have capped in T20Is in that time are Ambati Rayudu - who has been around since 2001-02 - Jadhav, Pandey and Sanju Samson. Of that lot, only Samson can be termed an IPL product. And he only got one game, against Zimbabwe, before being dropped.

All this while, the selectors have shown great reluctance to blood a generation of young batsmen with new-age T20 techniques and excellent first-class records. Karun Nair is a brilliant exponent of the reverse-sweep, Shreyas Iyer upsets bowlers' lengths by taking stance outside his crease or deep within it, Suryakumar Yadav plays the scoop over short fine leg from the moment he steps into the crease, and Deepak Hooda hits bigger sixes than most Indian batsmen. All have been important cogs in their IPL teams, and all have 40-plus first-class averages, with Nair and Iyer averaging over 50. All are aged between 20 and 25.

Can't blame the selectors... They have to select players which the captain wants... No point selecting players who will sit on the bench or in playing eleven won't get their full quota to bowl or won't get chance to bat in the screwed up batting order which favours favorite non performers...

I don't follow enough IPL and first class cricket to know which of those names is the answer. But I do know that any combination of Rohit, Dhawan, Rahane, Raina, Dhoni,Pandya, Yuvi and Jadeja is not the answer.

I really feel Jadhav, Iyer,Nair, can make difference in all three format

You need unorthodox cricketers in T20. Surya Kumar Yadav, Karun Nair, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Kedar Jadhav are your go to men for this format. India need to realize that this format is for young guns not for oldies. We need to look beyond Dhawan, Rahane, Raina, Jaddu now. Even Dhoni should retire from International T20s and give chance to build new WK so that transition is smooth in ODIs atleast when he retires. At this moment, you don't have any potential keeper as his replacement for ODIs. Sanju Samson is the guy everybody is talking about but he too will need his time and that can be done by giving him chances in T20s or playing him in ODIs as WK and Dhoni as proper batsman.

Pandya is your quintessential T20 batsman who can start hitting from ball 1. we need to give him time and let him bat in top 6. In T20, it is top 4-5 batsmen that most often win you matches. We need our big hitters to bat in that order. Rohit and Kohli have been good in T20s overall. Apart form these 3, we will need 3 more batsmen to bat in top 6.

To be honest selectors did a pretty decent job this time, Picking guys like pandya, bumrah ,nehra was praise worthy

We did reach semi final n we didnt loose badly, but yes we can improve more. 

Its not easy to get combinations right, we see every time a new t20 champion and its going to be 1st time that there wud be team winning second time.

Aus have lot of power hitter but their batting combination isnt right , so its not only bout selecting right players its also about combinations and conditions. 

A team like West indies wnt have dne well had matches been played in similar conditions to asia cup or even long ground like aus where running becomes really crucial. We wud have done better.

 

Lets not forget - rohit , raina , rahane all are ipl giants and we all know how they performed. 

Few of our other t20 legends are - raydu and axar patel m sure no one wants them

 

few innovative players we have- dinesh karthik, robin uthappa , sarfraz, hooda now out of which time n again uthappa n karthik have blew their chances in wc. Sarfraz n hooda will get their chances with time . They both are very new i dnt think our selectors n captain and even ppl wud have wud accepted the fact that so many newcomers wud have been send to wc. We already had bumrah n Pandya. We all rem how media n ppl reacted when Seniors werent selected for 2015 wc. 

Yes i feel selectors shud take more ruthless in selection thats were tour of zimb is imp where chances are wasted on guys like axar, raydu, jadhav, tiwary , mohit n all . thats were Samson, hooda, mann have to be checked to if they r gud enough or not. 

 

Selection of Rahane was pure disastor before tournament and for me his innings was actually the diff in semi finals. 

But even if we want to add guys like Samson, hooda , sarfraz, iyer, Manan It wnt make much of a diff becoz the problem is the Core of this batting unit thats is  rohit, rahane, dhawan, raina . A team with week core will face a defeat sometime or other. 

Manan, Sarfraz, Hooda, iyer and all are new they will have their own struggles thats were ur core team comes to rescue. But Our core unit struggled itself. Rohit n dhawan extreemly inconsistent , neither they gave u rockling starts, nor they won games single handedly infact their S/r were low most time and dot ball % was extremely high . Raina suppousivley t20 and he is the most unreliable guy. Rahane well he shudnt have been there in 1st place.

 

Get a t20 team right is extremely diff and needs a lot of luck, T20 is more of lottery thing.
