I wouldn't call Akram the best fast bowler ever but definitely the best left arm pace bowler ever. I still rate McGrath, Ambrose, Marshall and probably Holding higher. That being said I would have Akram in my ATG team for any format. Those who think Steyn is greater than Akram didn't see what Akram could do with the old or the new ball. He could literally bowl 6 different deliveries in an over, vary his pace or generate speed from a short runup when it looked like he was simply ambling in to bowl. He could make life difficult for a batsman on a flattish surface and make life hell if he got any sort of help from the pitch or in the air.

Steyn is like Waqar. Imran Kapil Hedlee Walsh Lillee Beefy Donald, Ambrose, list is very long. But if its about mastering the controlled swing, then none better than Akram

Dale Steyn has done the same. There is a reason he has such a good test record in India.

Problem with Steyn is that he has too many off days, especially in the shorter formats. There were so many instances where Steyn was taken apart but I hardly recall instances where Akram was taken for runs or easily hit around.

I rate Akram much higher than Waqar. Whenever India played Pakistan I used to worry about Akram but not that much about Waqar. Somehow Waqar never did well against India. McGrath was one other bowler who always scared me as an Indian fan.

You are comparing today's LOI cricket to 90s. Akram has himself admitted that it would have been very difficult for him to bowl in LOIs today like the way he bowled in his days.

Akram did had relatively shorter runup. I think that allowed him to have more precise. Probably he might have been a yard faster if he sacrificed precion.

 

Yes Steyn is definitely better Waqar. Its just the manner in which both bowl that i find similarities.

 

I am not so sure about Mcgrath. He had a knack of getting Tendulkar ou with unmatheable line and length. He had no variation. He is like Alistair Cook of bowling. Boring to watch

Akram also played in late 90s post 96 world cup when every team started hitting out in the first 15 overs of the innings a la SL. But I don't recall Akram being treated with disdain in the first 15 overs or at the death.
