HIGHLIGHTS

  • A 13-year-old Jain girl died in Hyderabad after observing a 68-day fast.
  • The girl, Aradhana, observed the 'Chaturmas' fast to bring good luck to her family.
  • Her parents had asked her to observe the fast on advice of a priest.

Indian parents have too much control over the lives of their children. We need some really tough laws to protect the rights of children.

I hope the parents and the priest have to do some serious jail time.

I won't be surprised if she becomes  some kind of a role model for parents and she is declared a sanskari daughter who made the sacrifice for the family.

Poor child....RIP

superstition + lack of education = beliefs in godmen who has total power over decision making for the family.

This happens all over India. Few years ago, there was a case of a priest who manage to convince women to sleep with him for good luck.

Fasting in the present era should not be recommended at all, the great saints and sages 2000 years ago were able to perform extreme fasts because they had enough endurance levels and fitness to do it. Even during Ramadan fasting, you're allowed to eat before sunrise and after sunset, so sustenance should not be completely ignored.
