saffers use to destroy us in ODIs ( cronje , kristen , hudson , rhodes etc.. ) .. they run for anything and everything agsiant us and we were simply hopeless to stop them 

Think back to 1996 Super 6 game vs Aussies - They batted first and ran practically every time they defended a ball, even if right at the fielder. Zero pressure on them, taking singles with impunity.  Not until the 40th over or something like that, Robin Singh came in from cover and ran into the stumps attempting a runout - They got a little careful after that, but still were able to run aggressively.   They went on to post 275 or so IIRC.   There used to be a 15-20 run differential in their batting vs ours, and another 10-15 run in our fielding vs theirs.  

 

This was one thing Veeru learned very early in his career from the Aussies - he was as aggressive and street-smart in his running as he was with his other-worldly shot-making.
