philcric Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Fascinating to watch Virat-Dhoni batting partnerships in ODIs. Has there ever been a more exciting pair to watch in world cricket when it comes purely down to running between the wickets? Wonder what it would have been like to see them bat together in the peak of their skills/fitness. Virat was at the beginning of his career at Dhoni's peak and Dhoni is near the end of his career at Virat's peak. velu and tweaker 2
tweaker Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Both would have beneffited .Dhoni at his age is still fit & can give a tough fit to his younger team mate Rasgulla 1

Just saying that it would have been 'even more' exciting to watch a 5 years younger Dhoni batting with the present day Kohli. Skill wise too, Dhoni at his peak, there would have been far fewer lunges (dot balls) and many more dabs and hits in the gaps, which would have resulted in even more running b/w the wickets. tweaker 1
Tibarn Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 ABD, Jadeja, Raina, McCullum, and Warner are/were great runners as well, IMO. The thing that is great about Dhoni-Kohli is that they have great running chemistry. They rarely get mixed up and they trust each others call. ABD is probably the fastest runner between wickets, but he always seems to get run out, and I don't think there is a player with which he seems to have a great running partnership with. Even in the IPL, him and Kohli have had their fair share of mix ups. At the WC2015 we had the highest run rate in the middle overs between power plays. This is a testament to how great our running is. Dhawan and Rahane are pretty good runners themselves, and Rohit is as well, once he gets in. This needs to continue to be a signature of our LOI teams. Hopefully the next line of talent is willing to learn from captains Dhoni and Kohli about the importance of taking singles. sourab10forever and tweaker 2
Ankit_sharma03 Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 A sight to watch them run, more reason they shud bat at 3,4 and keep the RR in Middle overs healthy . Their running helps each others game as well. 1 hour ago, Tibarn said: ABD, Jadeja, Raina, McCullum, and Warner are/were great runners as well, IMO. Dhawan, rohit and rahane are quick runner but still not good at rotating strike . They dont find those gaps for singles and doubles . If rahane had been that good his S/r wont have been an issue. That is something they all can learn from kohli n dhoni
WC2011INDIA Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Don't oversell this partnership because truth is that most decent batsmen will create solid partnerships with Kohli at the other end. Kohli gives them confidence and a sense of assurance. When Kohli gets out that's when they struggle to create partnership with others. tweaker and Lannister 2

It's not about the runs of the partnership, but the thrill of one specific aspect of the partnership ie. running between the wickets. So yes Kohli being in such vein of form will form good partnerships with all other batsmen but his 'running between the wickets' part of the batting is best with Dhoni. 31 minutes ago, Sachinism said: Kohli & ABDV Yes, that's an exciting partnership too, but they play together only in T20s, which has much lesser scope to run 1s, 2s and 3s over long periods of times, compared to the ODIs. Boundary hitting takes precedence over running for runs in the T20s.
maniac Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Yes...almost like 90's australian team....when they would maintain a R/R of 6.00 without even anyone realizing it.......Amazing to watch. Their fitness levels

However, I think the term good is relative. We've been spoiled with Dhoni and then Kohli, who are next level runners. I don't think there are many openers better than Dhawan at rotating the strike. His high average and strike rate are a testament to his ability to keep the strike moving. Funny enough, Rahane and Dhawan actually have great running chemistry between them when they opened together.

Man, a younger Dhoni and Kohli at his best? That would be a juggernaut. I think people have forgotten how beastly Dhoni was in ODIs in his 1st half career. Watching him bat with Veeru was always fun. Then again, watching anyone bat with Veeru was always fun - but young MS with Veeru was something else. sscomp32 1

Has Virat ever bothered to mention about running between the wicket with Dhoni, like the latter did in last match? Was really pleased in fact when Virat mentioned Saha being the best wicket keeper in the country...without any qualifications. Must have rankled Dhoni. lol tweaker 1

Yeah, I think a good 4-5 years at least. Then we'll get the next generation fans coming here and bashing him for not being as good as he used to. Lord and philcric 2
Vilander Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Raina was lefty but we got to see some innings with Raina/Dhoni combo in terms of running between the wickets. I think that would be close. velu and tweaker 2
velu Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 my worst nightmare about running between the wickets was when i started watching .. saffers use to destroy us in ODIs ( cronje , kristen , hudson , rhodes etc.. ) .. they run for anything and everything agsiant us and we were simply hopeless to stop them maniac, Vilander, express bowling and 1 other 4
