Even if you exclude first 6 years of Zak's career. He started doing well from 2006 SA tour after his county stint and he still averaged 33 at home.

They have now started doing well here when both of them have played 100 tests. you are comparing them to bowlers who barely played 20 tests. Regarding Shami being unproven, you forgot Umesh hasn't played a single test in England, SA, NZ yet. Shami has played in England, SA and NZ. So, he isn't that that unproven and has a lot of scope for improvement.

Shami was bowling too short from what I remember on away tours. He needs to get his length right.

Shami looks like a much better test bowler after his return from injury.

 

Now, he looks like taking wickets against top batsmen  more often than not....and succeeds on occasions too.

 

His figures would have been much better if not for so many dropped catches.

Yes and the reason for that is his much improved runup which has helped in increase pace and become more consistent. But he should look get fitter and stronger because overseas, he will have to bowl more overs, longer spells. Pacers will have to become strike bowler overseas unlike in India where spinners do that job.

Run-up and conversion of momentum into the delivery has been an  issue with many Indian seamers....good to see Shami improve this aspect.

 

Shami has increased his strength as well as stamina and is able to sustain his pace in the last session of a test match.

 

But, needs to improve his fitness and energy level.
