MCcricket Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) Wow Herath, dunno what's special about his bowling I guess bowls a Lott of overs and is accurate. One thing you can see is this era is short of flamboyant fast bowlers, except for Steyn no one else, most good bowlers are more injured then playing these days. Pat Cummin Starc Morkel Pattinson Milne Edited November 28, 2016 by MCcricket CricketBuffOne and MechEng 2
MechEng Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Good video! One thing to note is the truckloads of test matches played by Australia and England. Temujin Khaghan, Cricketics and CricketBuffOne 3

Pat Cummin Starc Morkel Pattinson Milne Great to hear from you, MCcricket! As far as Herath is concerned, you are spot on. Coming to the fast bowlers, what do you think about Jimmy, Broad and Boult? Think, they have plenty of fire power & X-factor.

Temujin Khaghan Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 it used to take about 8 years in 70s to complete 50 Test matches now england do it within 4 years CricketBuffOne 1

Broad, Anderson, Bolt are all F/M bowlers and not similar or as versatile in my view as past greats Waseem, Waqar, Mgrath, Donald, Marshall who have it all SkillS n pace to boot, n can bowl a side out in any condition n at any stage, Steyn is the only one in that list I would rate very highly, P Cummins , Pattinson, Starc would or could be in that category but can't stay on the field for long enough. FYI - Eng (74) & Aus (65) have played the most Tests in the last 5 years. express bowling, New guy and Temujin Khaghan 3

Fair point, but I wouldn't put at least Cummins & Pattinson in that category simply because they haven't played enough yet, hence it would be premature to arrive at a conclusion at this stage. They might have the potential, but for a fair assessment we need to see consistent results over a period of time. express bowling 1

Since someone mentioned Steyn, they should also mention Rhino CricketBuffOne 1

I think he would have become a great bowler... even with injuries and sporadic playing (loss of rhythm) he still has an outstanding one for these times. CricketBuffOne 1

Texan Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Surprised to see Nathan Lyon in that list. I guess Aussies playing many Tests and Lyon remaining mostly injury free has helped him get all those many wickets.

Aussies have played 65 Tests in the last 5 years and Lyon has featured in most of them. But participation alone hasn't helped him bag all those wickets; he has actually bowled well. Along with Herath, Ashwin & Yasir, he is among the top 4 spinners in the world currently. express bowling 1

Graeme Swann did the same. Both these guys put a lot of revs on the ball and get more turn and bounce than most finger-spinners. This has contributed immensely to their success. CricketBuffOne 1

Agree, its this ability of theirs that has helped them take wickets even on seam friendly or flat wickets. Another important thing to note is that unlike their peers they were/are not the main bowlers for their sides; sometimes didn't get to bowl enough as other bowlers in the side did their job well. Lyon operates with Starc/Hazlewood/Siddle, etc, while Swann had to bowl alongside Jimmy/Broad/Flintoff, Panesar, etc. In a sense they had to grab every wicket before someone else took it. express bowling 1

But unlike Swann, Lyon never seemed to understand how to lead on spinning tracks, for e.g. Ind and SL. CricketBuffOne 1
