Btw, isn't this thread about Eng's questionable tactics. I wonder why Cook hates British-Asians so much - dong his best to destroy Ali and Rashid's confidence by overbowling them into the ground.

probably he is thinking use him to the last drop when series is still alive
wont need him in home season anyway

they will need at least 1 spinner - rashid seems like much better choice than ali with ball.

but given their lust for all rounders of late they will prefer ali over him

Given Rashids a decent bat and come the summer there'll be the option of going in with 5 bowling options + Root I think it's quite possible Rashid could be preferred if required as Ali would probably be back at 8 anyway if not.

Something like :

Cook

Jennings/Hameed

Hameed/Jennings

Root

Bairstow

Stokes
Buttler

Woakes

Rashid

Broad

Anderson

This does seem like the best possibility - although I don't know if they will play both Jennings and Hameed; similarly, as noted earlier, they are more likely to go with Ali than Rashid, although latter is the more wicket taking bowler. They may also decide that Bairstow is one position too high.

Fairly sure given how both have started we'll see both of Jennings and Hameed in the first test of the summer. Bairstow seems to be handling batting at 5 and keeping fine at the moment but Stokes could always swap with him if he needs to come in a bit lower.

Yes, ths would be the best possible team but I hope they persist with Rasheed instead of Ali. The former, I think, has taken approx half of their wickets on this tour.

if both jennings and hameed  settles down in this order then root will also perform at his best

cook will go with ali because he gives more control

I don't think Ali offers more control, but he is a better bat than Rashid (and possibly fielding wise too). Still, a stupid decision if they drop their best spin bowler.

Playing Ali over Rashid for his batting is a classical Pommie blunder - especially given that their Keeper is a top order bat, AND they have Stokes.  Its right up there with playing 6 bowlers in bowler friendly conditions.  Nasser Hussain has so much angst every time he brings this point up, and he has been bringing it up all series.

As far as English tactical fail is concerned, look no further than Moeen Ali. You do not EVER make a bit-part allrounder bat as #4 in tests, that spot is for your best middle order batsman, PERIOD.

Its a better idea to put root in #4, get another guy to plug in #3 than Root in #3 and Moeen in #4. I think Moeen is the worst #4 batsman i've seen in test cricket for a long, long time.

India has been outstanding and this series has been one sided so far based on results but also the big reason for that is Cooks defensive n illogical captaincy, playing 6 bowlers when they cannot score enough, not bowling Rashid when he is the highest wkt taker, he is very defensive , short of ideas, reminds me of Dhoni, this same English team under a capt like Hussain could have drawn this series or atleast won a gams based on their team talent n resources.

Yes, Eng team selection is moron-ish, just like Oz.
