Should India have played a pacer instead of a spinner today?

Yes, Ashwin should no longer be an automatic selection in the ODI team.He bowls too negatively in ODIs compared to Tests and his batting is also more suited to Tests than ODIs.

What we ideally need is another all-rounder like Pandya, Stokes or Woakes who can bowl at a decent pace and get some runs. Not really sure if we have one. Since we don't have that, we should have at least played a wicket taking spinner like Mishra.

I think vijay shankar could be one, Dravid has rates him very highly

People like Rahane (batting) and Ashwin (bowling and batting), are Test players. By making them "adapt to ODIs" - they only get mixed up and can affect their Test skills. Ashwin was throwing darts in ODIs, and hope he never becomes a Dartbhajan in Tests.

Keep Rahane and Ashwin and Pujara and M.Vijay ONLY for Tests

That was the name I had in mind too, but haven't seen him play List A or T20 cricket.
