who said that? Karthik has a really good technique. What lets him down is his temperament.

People were mad here on forum when he was chosen as opener back in 2007.

Anyways, I am never big on technique and it is just my belief that if you can bat at no.3 and show temperament to play long innings, then you have enough technique to come and face the new ball and survive.

Hopefully he gets the slot he wants but if not available, he will have to adjust to what is available.

i wasnt here. what got Karthik the node was his batting against SA on SA tour of 2006. It was just an experiment like Sanjay Bangar in 2002. Karthik never did anything of note after that. He was just a one series wonder. For long term success, you need both technique and temperament. There are certainly exceptions like Sehwag but he had a very good defense.

Is iyer's defense not good enough ? in that case he cannot succeed even in middle order .

where you think he needs to improve to be in international class player.

    Is it he

1. Plays pre -meditated shots ?

2. Plays too many arial shots from the start?

3. Plays away from body too much in his offside play ?

Plays too much away from body, lack of footwork, plays across a lot, and suspicious against quick short stuff. Aerial stuff is okay because in tests you dont have many fielders outside.

Many make too much of techniques by just seeing a player when he is too raw and is still improving. Iyer is young and batting well and I am sure works on the swinging deliveries a lot. Players generally get better and improve more against swinging deliveries, especially Indian players, with time.

Also, if you bat at no 5/6, there is a very high chance that you will be facing brand new ball as the ball changes in the 80th over. It works the same way as an opener.  This is where Rahane is really good. So if one is saying Iyer can bat with the new ball at 5/6 when the ball is brand new, then he can surely open also if needed.

I am not denying player cannot improve. Iyer is a good prospect, but he too has his shortcomings like any other young batsman.

karthik''s problem was he failed to bat well lower down the order in asian conditions

After England tour 2007, he batted as an opener and failed. Karhtik was not the keeper, so, there was no chance for him to bat in lower down the order. He had to open and he failed. I think he struggled against the pace of Shoaib Akhtar as an opener in his next series when Pakistan toured later in 2007. He played first two tests and then they called up Gambhir for the third test.

he was never an opener ,for all his life he trained to be a wk batsman and then as dhoni came in he got desperate to try to get in the team ,it was like dravid's keeping, his primary job as a batsman was to bat well down the order in ind had he done that well he would have kept his place

still his overall performance as opener is not bad

Navdeep Saini impressing once again.

7-2-20-1 ,  with a rampaging Warner at the crease , is not easy.

I look forward to these games against international teams.... those bowlers who do well may have something special about them.

and on a flat pitch here both teams have scored over 4 an over, he has gone for under 3 and taking wickets.
