Lingayat Issue

Seems to be the most burning topic in Karnataka since past few months.

Any Kannadigas here, What's your take on the whole controversy? Do they deserve their own separate religion?

IMO granting them a separate religious tag would open the floodgates with every choti moti community rising up the demand to be called a separate religion to accrue the benefits under art 25-28.

Hinduism isn't like Abrahmic faiths where the contours of it's sphere are defined and it's just an umbrella term given by the Brits who were too lazy to research more on it, to the various Indic sects existing at the time.

Tomorrow what stops a Shavite from declaring himself different from worshippers of Shakti or Vishnu? Hope the Govt would take into account every possible scenario before rushing up so as to garner few votes.

Not a Kannadiga but agree with your bolded part. Congress is playing a dangerous game of divide and rule and based on surveys and social media even majority Lingayats aren't comfortable with separate religion tag.

Totally desperate times for Congress to pull this off to divide the Lingayat voting bloc. Most Lingayats I know worship Shiva and keep a IshtaLinga with them all the time. Even in some remote villages. The Basavanna sects who want to break away are mainly influenced by communists/or they call themselves rationalists, don't want to believe in Hindu gods and hindu traditions. They are trying to influence the so called downtrodden bloc among the Shaivites, to motivate them to break away. Sidda/Congress is trying to take electoral advantage.

THere are numerous sects in this caste and there are a lot of people who are sidelined by the powerful mutthas. But those who voted for BJP are still with Hinduism (Veerashaivas), hence the differentiation of Lingayats who have their own mutthas now. But most associate with Hinduism and this breaking of the caste will not hold good with Sidda and Congress. Plus, by antagonizing JD(S)/Devegowda, even Vokkaligas are against Sidda now.  Siddaramaiah was a Devegowda protege in JD(S) and changed parties to Congress and became CM. They don't like it as well.

Hence, you can see how the issue is clamped down by Congress in recent weeks because of ground reality,

Seems like a move which will backfire on congress. Firstly there are the many lingayats who want to be called hindu. And then the non-lingayat kannadigas who are watching this divisive politics. Yaddyurappa happens to be a lingayat. I don't like him (from long time) . Pity that bjp could not put up a Better guy.
