This upsets people in cricket forums but baseball has been doing it for decades.

They are able to improve the swing and efficiency of a batsman. The sensor gives the following metrics:

Power

Acceleration

Impact Momentum

hand Speed

Efficieny

Barrel speed

Impact speed

distance 

Angle

 

It can be dowmloaded on phone app also. High school kids also do it.

 

Baseball has it down to a science.

No wonder England employs baseball hitters for their teams.

Stupid of Intel to not try it during IPL. Way more data could have been collected. 

 

On second thought, this sounds like a first year engineering experiment using accelerometers. Sounds way cooler than it actually is just because Intel is attached to it. Pointless.

 

I am still waiting for "sabermetrics" revolution in Cricket ala Baseball.

Forget "sabermetics"! Cricket doesn't even have stats for one of the most important disciplines of the game - fielding. It's mind boggling that there are no stats about runs saved or given, or catches taken or dropped and its impact on the game, and nothing about runouts or direct hit frequency.

 

If we had such stats it would make selections much more easy. For example right now if Player A has batting average of 43 with SR of say 90, he will be preferred to Player B with an average of 40 and a SR of 87. But if there was fielding stats which showed you that player B actually saves 8 runs on an average in an odi, has a higher catching ratio (say .95 i.e. takes 95% of catches) and has a higher run out frequency or direct hit ratio (say .15, i.e. is able to hit the stumps 15% of the time from within the infield). This would make selection of B over A a no-brainer but unfortunately we don't have anything like that.

 

Baseball tracks fielding stats like anything and assigns E (Errors) to the team and player for any misfield or dropped catch. Cricket has a lot to get there and IMO fielding should be the first to be tracked before we start gauging bat speed etc. coz tracking fielding stats will have a much more profound impact on the game and results. I wish BCCI does that and India becomes the first team to select players which factors in fielding stats but I know it's way too much to ask from an organization like BCCI

Rohit won't stay long enough for any usable data to be collected and as for Rahane, it might actually push batting in the wrong direction

I take it you don't know much about BCCI  

 

I will be astounded if anyone in BCCI has ever heard about "Sabremetrics" or even thought of "Fielding Stats". They are more worried about how to get some more free money for themselves and friends, and how to milk the cash cow (Indian cricket) for as long as possible.

Not only fielding stats and errors etc, the straight up averages in cricket are done incorrectly for 100 years.

Batting and bowling averages in cricket mean nothing over a span of time. That is why I give more importance to IPL over tests numbers.

Unfortunately this is the beginning of robotic batsmanship. In future batsmen will give too much importance to data and be totally out of touch with their natural style.

This has nothing to do with that. This is about optimizing you swing and maximizing your efficiency. This is about doing things right and correctly.
