I see many suggesting Rohit to come back down to no. 4 or in middle order from where he started.

This is where he struggled a lot until we found him a place at top at the opening slot where he became one of our best openers in recent times. Do you think he should be brought back down the order now to accommodate Pant?

Pick your best opening combo and share your thoughts.

I think surely Rohit is a different player than what he was earlier in his career when he struggled a lot in the middle order and might do better than what he did earlier in his career at that position, but I really want him to stay at the opening slot and continue to bat with Shikhar while Pant can be utilized well at 4, replacing Yuvraj.

Ideally if our top 4 has 2 lefties and 2 righties, it will be great since it will keep the fielding team guessing and moving around as they have to keep changing the field for Right-Left combo.

I would like to see Pant at 4 replacing Yuvi and stick with Rohit/Dhawan for now until they are really struggling.

Currently, i don't think Rohit/Dhawan are struggling together. They failed against Pakistan but did score together well in most games.

Pant at 4 can be the deal.

I think Rohit is someone who accelerates well after settling in. It is in India's best interest for him to open. IMO, he should not come lower than 3. One unorthodox option is to have Dhawan, Pant, Rohit, Kohli in that order but VK has done exceedingly well at 3.

Would prefer Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Dhoni/someone else, and Pant. No. 4 has to be a solid batsman, preferably with experience, who can also rebuild after collapses. Of course, Dhonis powers are on the wane, but I dont think Pant is the answer at 4. He should either open, or come lower down the order.

Rohit Rahul with Dhawan at 3 Kohli at 4 ,Pant replaces Dhoni at 5 Manish Pandey, Samson as backups for middle order

followed by Pandya brothers at 6-7 with Shankar as the back up.

Kuldeep,Shami, Bhuvi and Bumrah 8-11

with Umesh and Chahal as backup

Ideally KL - Pant , but Dhawan cannot be dropped and I believe KL has the game to play down the order and may be can give Virat the support he needs in the middle order . So at this point am fine with Pant-Dhawan

Oh i so wanted to write a post about our opening .....

But my question was-

Are we happy with our opening, they both have good individual numbers

But

1. RR in 1st 10 overs is worst in world

2. We knw they ll struggle on tours of SA n NZ.......do we not give those tours any importance

3. Rohit crumbles under pressure or when the ball jaggs around

4. Dhawan also becomes patchy in between ICC events.

IF we want to change rohit, were does he bat.....can we drop a player with that numbers

If we drop dhawan, well he is somebody who takes his game to next level in ICC events

So what do we do

if he bats anywhere but opening you wont have to worry about his numbers to drop him

Like Vijy mentioned above, Rohit is someone who does well after getting settled and he has done well for India on top so to bringing him down might turn out to be a backward step as he might slow things down in the middle if he comes around 35th over.  It is better to have him continue to open where he has done brilliantly over the years and ask Pant and Rahul to come down at 4 and 5.

Hence the reason he should continue to open. Bringing him down the order is not ideal.

Also Rahul keeps going in and out of the team due to injury, we can not keep changing our opening combination because of him going in and out, that unsettles the whole line up. I rather have Rahul play in the middle order than have him open the innings.

Thats what m saying they both have individual numbers but what about other issues

RR issue- ok they cover up but they ll get out to many days then

Struggle in bowler friendly conditions

Rohit struggle under pressure

If good perfomances is the only thing then both cnt be dropped

Rahul is an out and out opener why tinker with it...let Dhawan bat at 3 and Kohli at 4 definetely a massive upgrade over Yuvi or Raina at 4

I agree, but I would reverse batting order. No.4 should be capable of (i) defense in case of collapse, (ii) accumulation in case things are going normally in middle overs, and (iii) attack at later stages. Feel that KLR is better suited at 4 and Pant/Jadhav at 5/6.

Problem is that Dhoni will continue to play, and to accommodate him, he should play at 4, KLR at 5, and Jadhav at 6. I dont think there is a place for both Pant and Dhoni in a full-fledged XI.

Dhawan is also an out and out opener. KL Rahul (at least in IPL and WI T20 last year) has shown some indications of being capable of batting in middle order.

I think people were so angry after the loss against Pak that we started thinking too much as fans. Both openers still after struggling in the finals did well through out the England tour. This is the same place where we will play the world cup and i rather just stick to this Dhawan/Rohit combo.

Idealy if our middle order can have Rahul and Pant who follow Kohli in the batting order, you can't ask for better than that.

Lets just hope Rahul stays for a long time and doesn't go out to injury again.  Such injury prone guy can't be a opener at this time. He still has age on his side and we can use him as opener post 2019 wc.

Rahul has batted n done well at 4

No m not really up for changing ur best batsman kohli position , let ur best batsman get more balls n his fav position

Its like reducing ur best batsman effectiveness

At 3 kohli can control the game , at 4 he ll have to play acc to situation.

No 3 is one position that shudnt be even touched.

Ill have rahul or pant at 4 as they have more strokes then kohli , I find rahul more suited to that place .

Amla averages 50+ , fastest to reach 1000, 2000 ..7000 runs ? has a SR of 90+ .  if you ask me hes a pretty limited ODI player and him with all these great stats has had close to zero impact on SA's results . So yeah statistically lot of mediocre players look great these days .

There is another opener comparable to Rohit , Ahmed shehzad .

6 ODI hundreds in 79 matches , Rohit has 11 in double the matches . Thats killer stats for a Pak opener isnt it ? Played the first match against india played a typical Rohit sharma innings . Pakistan did something we dont dare to do these days , replaced him with a young dasher and you know the rest is history !!
