When it comes to serious punishments like match suspensions there has to be a human judgment involved rather than automatic points deciding everything. Maybe the Soccer yellow/red card system may work better (I think it has already been proposed). A player already yellow carded will be careful not to go overboard

I think players and teams are not aware of this system fully. In Football teams go out of way to ensure carded players are protected and are careful about not picking up further offences.
