IPL to be broadcasted on Doordarshan?

In a shocking move, the Indian Broadcast and Sports Ministry are likely to send out a dikat asking BCCI to telecast Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on Doordarshan. Doordarshan is free-to-air channel run by Government of India. Ever since its inception the IPL has been broadcasted on private channels (SET MAX and soon Star Sports) but this move will help cricket reach a wider audience.

The I&B ministry has been doing its paper work to make this proposal a viable one for weeks says a report published in republicworld.com. All this comes after earlier in the year Star India inked a breathing take deal of INR 16,435 crores for IPL media rights for the next five seasons. The eight-week IPL s 60 games are now valued at INR 544,916,667 per match, which is well over India s international matches.

It is not as controversial as it sounds...a guy paying good money for premium cable,HD broadcast or whatever will not watch on DD anyways...but the guy who can not afford the premium cable packages etc will watch it on DD....so it is actually a win win if they telecast both on the cable channels+ DD it will definetely reach more homes.

If they are asking them to only telecast on DD then that is stupid.

If DD goes back to the Narrotam Puri types with some super boring analysis I will pick that any day over Siddhu and the annoying Jumping Jhaapaks.

Good, will spread the popularity of IPL in villages which will become small towns in a few years time.

That is correct. Free to Air channels do make a significant inroads. I remember, when  IPL rights were given to ITV by Lalit Modi, it was masterstroke. Every Cricket literate enthusiast talked about IPL. Since rights were sold to Sky, Not even Indians who love cricket, bothered to take new SKY subscription for IPL. Only one who has it, watch it.

I still dont get it. What does this mean?

It means, If ICC  and BCCI  ganged up with CoA and help themselves with BCCI earning, GoI decided they will simply cut the main source of earning for BCCI.

However a better move would have been GoI passing a law to stating alll Indian games of ICC event must be shown on Free to Air DD. As this is only way, access and equality can be maintained to every citizen.

What it also means is, ICC Manoha,r PCB ,which have been talking so much nonsense that India Pakistan game is must else this loss, this action, this lawsuit, that compensation.

GoI has simply reminded them all that, Sort it out. Else it will be all over
