Gujju pride killing the indian lions off. 23 die in short time

The Guj govt should transfer some of the lions to the MP sanctuary to be introduced there. Pretty irresponsible by them in this case with not transfering some of the pop. They seem to be opening some new parks now to transfer the animals within Guj now after the news has spread.

Ahmedabad (Guj): In the wake of the death of 23 Asiatic lions in Gujarat's Gir forest in the last 20 days, the state government on Thursday announced setting up two safari parks near here and in Narmada district to accommodate the growing population of big cats.

The government would also shift some of the lions in the upcoming parks as their population in the Gir sanctuary has gone up to 600, a minister said.

"One such park would come up near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's upcoming 'Statue of Unity' near Rajpipla town of Narmada district and another one near Ahmedabad," minister of state for forest Raman Patkar said at Vapi in Valsad district.

^ They should have done this a while ago I think...

what has this virus to do with moving lions to MP? that is a completely different issue. Virus can kill them even in MP.

The virus, by virtue of it coming all the way from Tanzania to Guj, could spread to MP as well. FWIU, it is spread by other infected animals, so the lions also being in MP would not necessarily prevent further infection of the population.  This is especially true b/c Guj and MP share a border and no doubt both animal and human migration happen between the states = chance of virus spreading.

It doesn't look like a issue of Guj pride so much as I think they tried being oversmart with marketing:

Basically Gir Forest becomes a UN recognized site with the selling point as home of the only Asiatic Lion pop, and then tourism increases... but If they are all dead then there is no point:facepalm:

virus does not come from Tanzania..it spreads from human habitation and dog feces.

there are similar cases in wolves in kenyan highlands.. need a secure population in some highly secluded national park, guj simply does not have more space to do that, need some lion sanctuarys in MP, even identify other such territories in other arid semi arid locations lots in Rajastan, Karnataka, TN, Andhra..

this should be the wakeup call. Gir will still be pre eminent - just have other healthy populations.

The government has launched massive operations to ensure that the infection does not spread to other big cats in their only abode in Asia.

According to officials, a deadly combination of Canine Distemper Virus and Protozoal infection is responsible for the death of at least 11 of 23 lions in the Gir sanctuary.

The condition of three of over 36 lions currently under observation of Forest department is critical, officials said.

Other lions in the sanctuary are being examined randomly to find out if they are infected by the CDV whose outbreak had killed over a thousand lions in Serengeti forest areas in Tanzania in 1990s.

The mass deaths have jolted the government which has launched a number of measures including importing 300 shots of a vaccine from the US to protect the lions.

This says this virus affects many types of animals

Quote

Host range[edit]

Distemper, or hardpad disease in canines,[14] affects animals in the families Canidae (dog, fox, wolf, Raccoon dog), Mustelidae (ferret, mink, skunk, wolverine, marten, badger, otter),[11][14] Procyonidae (raccoon, coati), Ailuridae (red panda), Ursidae (bear), Elephantidae (Asian elephant), and some primates (e.g., Japanese monkey),[11] as well as Viverridae (raccoon-like South Asian[citation needed] binturong, palm civet),[11] Hyaenidae (hyena),[citation needed] Pinnipedia (seals, walrus, sea lion, etc.),[15][9][citation needed] and large Felidae (cats,[11] though not domestic cats.[citation needed])

In a captive population of giant pandas in China (Shanxi Rare Wild Animal Rescue and Research Center), six of 22 captive pandas were infected by CDV. All but one infected panda died; the survivor had previously been vaccinated.[16]

The good thing is that the vector doesn't seem to be kinds of birds or mosquitoes...

MP is obvious choice, apparently they qualify it based on historical range, presence of large prey, and affluence of  farming communities in the borders ( meaning lions will take cattle and if the headers are poor they will kill the lions off  rich ones can be brought into programs and be convinced to protect the lions)etc .. the dense  equatorial jungles are no place for Lions as tigers will predate them there, any and all of the semi arid to deciduous national parks in the entire belt of central india  through Andhra  all the way till TN etc are prime candidates.
