Modernizing test cricket - A Fan perspective

Test cricket for 5 days is no longer relevant today. People dont have the time and besides attention span is too small. Hell i cant even watch 2 hour movies.

 

To top that there are so many other forms of entertainment and other sports that cricket is best suited for folks who are cricket fanatics or retired people .

 

So this is what i feel might work out for me.

 

Test cricket over 6 days exclusively in evenings.. starts at 4 ends at 10 . Max of 60 overs/ day.

Test always starts on monday and ends on saturday

 

There are two innings. Team winning the toss can decide the innings and the order in which they bat in the innings. So say winning team says they want to bat 1st in second innings, losing team can decide order for first innings. This will take toss as a big deciding factor .

 

Now first innings is 110 overs. That's all a team can bat. If they fold early, the remaining unused overs can be used by the team batting second on top of their 110 overs.

 

The second innings is 70 overs and the same rule applies. Hence there is no draw concept here. Second innings will be like odi with some test skills.

 

And lastly allow 2 substitutions/team at end of first innings . This is to make some strategic changes based on pitch changes or where the teams are after the first innings. Every sport has substitution, why should cricket not have it...

 

And yeah the cricket stadium should be more like a carnival so that there are separate activity centers for spouses, children, college students, shoppers , video game arcades etc.. more like a entertainment hub with cricket stadium in the center .

 

It's a long post.. woukd love to hear your  opinion folks..

I think cricket cannot survive with just t20s. Odis are useless with pancakes.

 

This could be a good middle ground and kill Bilateral ODis. This format could start off as a test and end as ODi or T20 depending on pitch, targets. 

 

Tests are useless in current format because more likely the team winning toss wins it and favors home country a lot. This could make it more competitive .

 

ODis i feel are totally irrelevant. Only world cup matters .

Looks like a t20 fan perspective.

Test cricket needs pitches that are similar to current series in Australia.

We are playing too much cricket resulting in tired and injured bowlers.  

You just need some spice in pitches and fresh and talented bowlers.

Intent is to have bowler friendly wickets and close down in 4 days. But 90 overs is too much for a day . Hence 60. The  other rules are to bring some strategy into cricket while negating the toss influence to a smaller extent.

 

By having time bound innings it will require a mix of aggression and composure .. so it's not all wham bam..And the first innings is 110 overs which is still decent ..

Yahaan logon se 5 din hazam nahin ho rahe toh 6 kahaan se honge. I see Tests being a 4 day extended weekend affair in the not so near future that start on Thursday and finish on Sunday.

I am a big fan of test cricket. It would help tests if we have sporting pitches 

 

I can’t imagine it would be interesting to see only ODIs and T20s being played. The good thing about having multiple format is you have the option to watch what you like 

 

Much like you don’t watch every movie that releases or eat everything that is on the buffet. You pick what you like and stay away from what you don’t like
