Victory thread: India U19 Champions

What is it about Dav Whatmore and World Cups? First with Sri Lanka in 1996, where his team went all the way, then with Bangladesh where his team dumped Pakistan out of the 1999 World Cup and then more recently India were sent packing from the latest edition of the premier tournament, one in which Bangladesh also got the best of South Africa. Now, it’s the Indian under-19 team that has become the latest to benefit. “The boys did all the hard work, my contribution was very minimal,” a typically understated Whatmore told the Hindustan Times from the middle of a raucous celebration at the Kinrara Oval. But the coach wasn’t the least bit surprised by the latest win he has presided over. “To be honest it did not come as a surprise at all when we won, because we were probably the best team in the competition. For sure we were the most consistent.” Whatmore was all praise for the manner in which his unit had approached the competition. “It’s a youth team and these teams are always a work in progress. But the advantage this bunch had is that they have been playing together for about a year now,” said Whatmore, preferring not to single out any particular player for success. “The thing that made the big difference was the strong desire these boys had to get ahead, to succeed and show what they were capable of. They are very serious about their cricket and have the talent to back it up as well. It all just came together really well.” Even when pressed to pick out a bowler or batsman that stood out, in his estimation, Whatmore refused to do so. “What I’ve seen with this team is that it’s not as though one player has been responsible for getting all the wickets or getting all the runs,” he said, pointing to the fact that Turuwar Kohli, Virat Kohli and Tanmay Srivastava have all scored more than 200 runs while Iqbal Abdullah, Ravinder Jadeja and Siddharth Kaul all had 10 wickets apiece in the tournament, and Ajitesh Argal and Pradeep Sangwan scalped eight each. “It’s not that we’re dependent just on one individual or the other. There’s been an even spread right through the tournament and that’s helped us pick things up and stay consistent. India were no doubt helped along by the Duckworth-Lewis method which changed South Africa’s target from 160 off 50 overs to 116 off 25 overs. But Whatmore refused to take any credit away from his team. “Duckworth Lewis is now part of cricket and it’s been for a while. It’s just part and parcel of the game and you have to accept that. Whether you’re batting second or fielding second it could affect you. Sometimes it goes against you, sometimes it works for you, and sometimes it doesn’t change things at all.”

For chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunday was a day to remember. He had been associated be with the development process of junior cricketers in the country and couldn't stop smiling after the Sunday's double triumph. After India beat Australia in the first tri-series final in Sydney and the U-19 team lifted the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Vengsarkar said, "It is a great day for Indian cricket." The U-19 boys came in for special praise, with Vengsarkar saying, "We have come close in the past. Dav Whatmore has played a crucial role this time. I would credit BCCI for appointing him as coach." Skipper Virat Kohli's leadership skills also came in for praise. On Tendulkar's innings, he said, "It was brilliant. What I liked most was that he stayed till the last run was scored." Rohit Sharma also wowed the chief selector. "He would have learnt a lot by playing alongside Sachin. It was a partnership which came in at a very crucial time. There is no youngster or senior in the team, everybody is there on merit."

Congrats Boys !!! Our U-19 boys have shown us they are no less than the senior team, by winning the WC. For Indian cricket fans, this would in some ways signal a greater joy than even India winning in Aus or against Pakistan. Winning a world cup is something great whether 50 overs, T20 or U-19, and in an era when cricket is taken over by corporates and megabucks, a world cup for the national team and that too by a bunch of aspiring young India players of the future, is wonderful. I think these boys should be paid much more than 15 lakhs, but I wonder if huge money should be paid to 17s and 18s year old boys all of a sudden, who knows what it may do to them. Perhaps big money can be allotted and held in a cricket trust for these boys till they complete 2 seasons of International cricket or something, and if they dont make it to the team within 3-4 seasons, then it can be paid over when they cross 21. Money can corrupt and distract talent from performing, but for many youngsters money may be needed too. many may be from humble/normal backgrounds and sums like 15-20 lakhs would be big for them, especially when they would have all given up other academic pursuits at 15-16 to pursue cricket and how many may actually play for India. BCCI should allot bigger prize amounts, but dispense money in a wise manner according to needs.

They will be felicitated by Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, in a function at the ground at 6 pm and the board will also host a dinner at the Grand Ashok hotel. The function is being organised by the KSCA along with Vijay Mallya's IPL franchise, Bangalore Royal Challengers. The Indian board has already announced a cash reward of Rs 15 lakh (US$37,500 approx) for each of the players. India beat South Africa by 12 runs in the U-19 World Cup final in Kuala Lumpur. The team were unbeaten through the competition and beat South Africa twice in the event. It means India's U-19 side have lost just one game in the last two World Cups - the final loss to Pakistan in the last edition in 2006. In September last year a grand ceremony at a packed Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai saw Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the Indian team honoured for for winning the inaugural ICC World Twenty20. While the players received cheques of Rs 80 lakh ($200,000) each, the coaches and support staff were given Rs 15 lakh ($38,000) each. IPL beckons In the coming days, the U-19 stars will sign up for the various IPL teams. The board was considering stipulating a condition that each of the franchises in the Indian Premier League will get the first option for picking Under-19 players from their own catchment areas. But some of the franchises, who don't have too many U-19 players in their catchement areas, are not too comfortable with that and decision will be taken in a week's time. As things stand, Virat Kohli, Tanmay Srivastava and Pradeep Sangwan are expected to join the Delhi franchise, Abhinav Mukund and Napoleon Einstien are tipped to play for Chennai, Ravindra Jadeja is likely to turn up for Jaipur, Manish Pandey and Sourabh Tiwary for Bangalore, Iqbal Abdulla for Mumbai, Taruwar Kohli and Siddarth Kaul are expected to join Mohali and Shreevats Goswami will most likely turn out for Kolkata.

Why do you always compare with Pakistan ? Besides, running a victory lap in the ground after winning an international series is *OK*, but an open-top bus parade for an U-19 victory ? Anyways, I actually already know why they do these things. Its got absolutely nothing to do with cricket. This is just a media hungry state association president or some local politician, desperate for some publicity, being unabashedly opportunistic and just joining the bandwagon of world cup victory. The worst part is, most of these politicians give a fck about cricket otherwise, but lose no chance to use it to increase their profile. So Frustrating...
