Topic is beat the test 11 and not the test 12..So my team stays :winky:

My 12 man will not perform in your 11 (also there are a bunch of right handers in the top 5 .... Lara has a good record in SL .... Sobers, who hit 6 6s of a spinner and 365* against Pak quickly as he had to go to the race iirc, and Gilly play attacking cric)

Game Rules:

* pick a team to beat the 11 (+ 12th man) below

* you cannot pick anyone from the 11 + 12th man in the OP (as the team to beat it should be different)

* you can pick only 11 players + 12th man (so no X/Y)

* Players should have either picked up 100 wkts or scored 2,000 runs

Test 11

Gavaskar

Viv Richards (avgs around 60 or more as a top order batsman)

Bradman

Lara

Smith

Sobers

Gilchrist

Hadlee

Marshall

Warne

Ambrose

12th man: Murali (so can be played as per conditions/requirements)

any padsosi team + padosi umpire will beat this team..

Not bad! Notes:

  • Imran Khan at 6 appears to be too high for him in a world 11 esp. as we know he did not bat and bowl equally well in the same period. His batting improved once his bowling lost some teeth. Usually, he can  be picked as a bowler, with his batting an added advantage. And with Marsh at 7, batting appears to lack depth, esp when the OP 11 has Bradman, which is like playing two batsman. Also Sobers at his peak could be like 1.25-1.30 batsman (Avg 65 in the 58-73 period over 75 tests)
  • For WK, you could also consider Flower, who has a great test record (avg 52) or Sangakara (Avg 57), if you want to make him keep
  • There are more penetrating bowlers than Akram  for e.g. in tests  Link  unless you want a left arm option. But in test cricket, you want the better bowlers than variety
  • There are likes of Chappell (Avg 54) as well who are brilliant vs fast bowling. G Pollock (avg 61) is an option as well and can be tried as an opener

Specialists are needed in test, Marsh might not be as good a batsman as Sang, Dhoni , Knott or  Flower but he has been in my onion the best wicket keeper ever, closely followed by his countryman Ia Healey. You need THE best keeper against the likes of Lillee, Akram and Imran. Imran Always was a solid batsman and you need an allrounder at # 6 and not another batsman. I always believe Waqar , at his peak was more threatening bowler than Akram but with three front line fastmen already in, you need the best left arm pacer to play the game ever in the team. I considered Sydney Barne also.

There is not a huge difference in WK skills among top WKs. In your team, I would bring in someone like Flower at 6 in place of Marsh, who is at 7. Imran can move down to 7 and that would not sacrifice on keeping skills but add some depth to batting .... Another option is to play the 12th man Kallis, who can bowl if required, in place of someone like Akram. In that way you still have Lillee-McGrath-Imran-Kumble attack, while adding more depth to batting.

I thought about that but wanted an aggressive team , one to win , not to draw. there was nothing special about Flower's keeping, March was outstanding. Kallis was a containment bowler, no like Akram.

Flower was effective. For e.g. Marsh and Healy could be a better WKs than Gilly, but Gilly would be picked as he adds more value to the team .... You have 4 good bowlers. Kallis would be there to not bowl but support the 4 bowlers if required, while adding much needed depth to the batting

But at the end of the day, you should be happy with your team! I am just trying to understand the selection process

From those i watched:

For pace friendly wickets

Boycott
Grenidge
Sangakarra (wk)
Sachin
Kohli
Steve Waugh (C)
Kapil Dev
Jeff Thomson
Dennis Lillee
Marshall
Holding

Five pace attack - Two great bowling pairs . The pair of Thomson and Lillee is the deadliest and most effective pace duo i have seen bowl in tandem. The other pair of Holding and Marshall was equally destrcutive. Kapil Dev, the most natural cricketer ever when his batting and bowling technique is considered, a long lasting bowler and India's highest test wicket taker amongst pacers is a perfect foil bowling with his swing on pace friendly wickets.

Boycott can grind and hold one end. Grendige too was well equipped having faced West Indian greats of those times in nets and other prominent pacers of the era. Sanga plays a dual role of being a wicket-keeper and batsman who was very suceesful in tests at No. 3. After the opening pair of Boycott and Grendige along with Sanga have seen of the pace attack, Sanga, Sachin and Kohli are the best players of spin to milk spinners for runs. Waugh is a perfect choice for cpatain and a crisis man although his batting would not be required much. Kapil Dev, one of the worlds best ATG ever can play his natural agressive batting or launch a counter attack irrespective of the conditions.

can't pick marshall as he is in the original team (read OP)

PS In an Aus AT11, McGrath would be picked over Thomson more often than not. And of course there are bowlers like Steyn,  Donald, etc.

For spin friendly wickets

Boycott
Sehwag
Sangakarra (wk + cap )
Sachin
Kohli
Javed Miandad
Prasanna
Garner
Chandrasekhar
Marshall
Bedi

Worlds best spin attack ever -  Prasanna (Offie), Chandra (leggie) and Bedi (SLA)
The worlds best spin attack ever needs no spin friendly wickets. A spin friendly wicket would be a luxury for this trio. There is enough variety as well. With 3 spinners

I would pick Garner to hit the deck hard on the wickets which assist spin and would offer little assistance to pacers. Delviering the ball from height of almost 11 feet, he would be able to extract more bounce on liefelss wickets for pacers. With Marshall he forms the pace bowling attack of my 11.

On a spin friendly wicket, the opposition spinner Warne can be milked for runs by the great players of spin like Sanga, Sachin, Kohli,Miandad and Laxman.

As  Marshall is in your team, i am replacing Marshall with Garner.

Will give it a shot

Greenidge - Caribbean flair. 4 200s

Sehwag - T20s in tests. 6 200s (and can bowl off spin too)

Ponting - looks to take the initiative away from the other team. brilliant at his peak

Sachin - most conditions batsman

G Chappell - superb player of fast bowling

S Waugh - fighting spirit (and can bowl too)

ABDV - 360 degrees genius. will double as the keeper

Steyn - swing

Lillee - complete bowler

Donald - pace and those missile like yorkers

Chandra - mystery spinner

12th man Kallis - AR. ideally would be in the playing 11 but lost out to relatively more aggressive players
