Here I wish to compare how the standard of test cricket has improved in the sub-continent in the last 3 decades.I have made a 1st and 2nd XI for 1990 onwards and pre-1990.

Pre-1990 1st XI

Sunil Gavaskar

Vinoo Mankad

Zaheer Abbas

Javed Mianadad

Gundappa Vishwanath

Kapil Dev

Imran Khan

Abdul Qadir

Wasim Bari

Fazal Mahmood

Subash Gupte

1990 and after 1st XI

Saed Anwar

Virendra Sehwag

Rahul Dravid

Sachin Tendulkar

Virat Kohli

Kumar Sangakaara

Azhar Mehmood

Wasim Akram

Waqar Younus

Shoaib Akhtar

Muthiah Murlitharan

Post 1990 XI would win by a narrow margin  with more match winners having more explosive batsmen and more lethal fast bowling.Talent on par but post 190 batsmen more reliable or durable.Still pre-1990 team had better spinners and more all-rounders .Vinoo, Kapil and Imran is quite a handful number of allrounders.

 2nd XI pre-1990

Vijay Merchant

Hanif Mohammad

Majid Khan

Mohinder Amarnath

Vijay Hazare

Asif Iqbal

Mushtaq Muhammad

Syed Kirmani

Sarfraz Nawaz

Bishen Bedi

Erapalli Prasanna

2nd XI 1990 and after

Sanath Jayasuriya

Gautam Gambhir

Mahela Jayewardene

Aravinda De Silva

Inzamam Ul Haq

Salim Malik

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Abdur Razaak

Zaheer  Khan

Mushtaq Ahmed

Mohammad Asif

Jasprit Bhumra

Both teams more or less equal.Post 1990 has more lethal fast bowling and faster scoring batsmen  while pre -1990 has more accomplished batsmen and better allrounders and spinners. If  I had to flip a coin here I may just go for 2nd pre-1990 XI.

Overall proves standard has marginally improved but cricket was also very competitive before the 1990s on the sub-continent .In certain conditions they may have even toppled the teams from 1990 onwards.

Majid Khan and Hanif Mohammad both have been included in many all time world eleven, surprisingly they are not in the first eleven, Majid at his peak was an ATG and should be opening with Gavaskar.
