ODIs

In the 70s-80s period vs. top teams, I have taken batsmen with

  • a minimum of 2,000 runs scored
  • an average of 40 or more

The batsmen with these qualifications would compete with Sir Vivian Richards:

Top Indian batsmen during the period vs. top teams. None of them have an average of 40, but Kapil has a great SR:

Shocked to see Srikkanth with a strike rate of just 68, barely 3 points above Shastri. Srikanth was considered a swashbuckler while Shastri was considered a plodder.

kapil was too far ahead of his time and batted too low. in today's era, I think his bowling would suffer to some extent (can see him avg around 28-29 with a SR) but his batting could win matches on his own. Could have easily played at no. 5 or no. 6 in the current team IMO

Shastri batted at various positions. Srikant usually opened with Gavaskar, and there is a variance in their SRs, though Gavaskar has a higher average, so Srikant would appear relatively a swashbuckler.  Most of the time, they played red ball cricket

Yeah, Kapil batting offers value! In terms of potential, he was like a 40+ test avg batsman

he should have avgd close to 40 with bat in tests - was a much better batsman than jaddu, who himself has improved greatly over the past few yrs and has a career avg of 35+.

However, I think kapil's real value to Ind would be in ODIs. top opening bowler, canny in middle overs. Devastating batsman who could probably score faster than even pandya and with greater consistency. can see him in today's ODI era having buttler-like stats of an avg in high 30s and SR of 120+.

Even Gavaskar could have great stats today. Can play 100 balls in most games w/o problem to avg 65-75

yes, that's why I mentioned SR also. Kapil I think would have godly SR. remember he was outpacing Viv, who was in turn light years ahead of others in SR (and also in avg of course).

I think sunny could have amla like record, especially if he chose to play for himself.

Gavaskar and Kapil opening the batting now would be interesting. One is among the greatest player of fast bowling (can hook, pull, cut, play . straight drives) and the other likes to smash bowlers, and can play freely with the comfort of Gavaskar at the other end.

gavaskar was fantastic all-round player, but amarnath at his best was an even better player of fast bowling. Many of sunny's big knocks against WI came against relatively weaker teams.

What I would enjoy seeing is Kapil and Sehwag opening the batting. utter madness. can expect a typical start of 6 overs 70/1 because one of them would fall soon. we should not forgot that sehwag had a 100+ SR in an era when few batsmen did.
