What roles are up for grabs in the Indian team across all 3 formats?

Opening slot : Taken  with Shaw and Rahul in the mix as backups.  No vacancy 

 

Spin dept we have 3 world class spinners with Nadeem waiting in the wings.

 

Fast bowling:we have 4 bowlers who look frontline despite injury to 2 main bowlers (Ishant and Bhuvi),

 

Middle order:  Pujara, Virat and Rahane aren’t going anywhere for now but there is a window here.

Keeping: Saha is the first choice and there is no doubt he is world class with the gloves. Pant is the backup and after his exploits in Aus and Eng in a perfect world he should get a long run if that slot opens up before trying someone else.

 

Vacancy: Total 2 slots -2 slots In middle order

 

Vihari is a backup but I think there can be another young batsman who can be in the mix here. Gill,Iyer, anyone else in the pecking order?

 

ODIs

 

Opening/Top 3 : very crowded here with top 3 being a given with Rahul in the mix as a backup. No openings here

 

Middle order: India’s continuing problem last year has kind of been solved with the emergence of Iyer. With Pandya coming back it will look better. However guys like Pandey,Dube ,Jadhav don’t seem like long term options. So there are atleast 2 openings here for backups.

 

Fast bowling : Bumrah,Bhuvi,Shami,Saini,Chahar and Thakur with Khaleel in the mix. Don’t see too many openings here. I am not saying Thakur and Khaleel are not irreplaceable but the slot seems a little crowded and a lot has to happen for a youngster to get a shot.

 

Spin: Kuldeep,Jadeja and Chahal. Chahal has been hit or miss and Jadeja keeps getting a run for his mythical allround abilities. I think there is a slot here for another young leg/finger spinner.

 

Keeping: Don’t see Rahul as a long term option and Pant seems to be out of favor for the time being. Vacancy here as well

 

Vacancy: total 4 slots- 2 slots in the middle order, 1 spinner,1 keeper-bat.

 

Gill,Mayank/Shaw (in m.o), Sky (don’t rate him. Another Jadhav. but he earned it),Samson,Rahane  are all in the mix.

 

Samson,Kishen for keeping slot

 

Rahul Chahar,Sundar and Ashwin for the spinners slot.

 

T20s

 

Opening : Rohit and Rahul have sealed the deal and Dhawan will be in the mix and Samson also is the backup opener. Just like the other 2 formats, crowded space here

 

Fast bowling: Pretty much the same as ODIs.Slots have been taken

 

Spin: Don’t see Jadeja or Sundar as a long term option. Kuldeep is good in this format. Chahal is again inconsistent. There might be an opening for a mystery spinner here or a hard hitting batsman who can roll his arm over. Axar  anyway there will be a vacancy here soon I think.

 

Keeping: Rahul is adequate in this format. Even if Pant is on his way out, there is still Samson so don’t see an opening here.

 

Middle order: plenty of openings here. Atleast 3 hard hitting middle order bats/backups needed. Iyer and Pandya have their slots for now but atleast 3 more players needed in the mix.

 

Vacancy: 4, 3 middle order slots and 1 spinner slot.

 

Sky, Krunal,Ashwin (who is a better t20 bowler than odi), R.Chahar,A.Patel,Gill,Mayank etc can be contenders.

 

 

I don’t rate specialist allrounder as a skill, if someone can be a good bat or bowler and has an additional skill let’s treat that as a bonus.

 

Anyway we talk about x,y,z but Indian talent pool seems to be crowded, so let us discuss the available slots and the players who will fit here 

 

Also not a fantasy wishlist let’s keep it real as to who has a genuine shot

Fast bowling in ODI- Bumrah, Bhuvi will play next Wc, Saini might be another but under kohli i fear for every unsettled player. I dont see Shami las till next WC so the extra seamers n backup are up for grab

I think all these roles, plus keeper and opening, middle and lower order bat has been taken by KL Rahul.
